Just returned from the German Cafe in Paoli where we met Bob and CarolC and BillP and NJ for lunch. Donna and I arrived first. Nicole recognized us and said she had us set up in the Blue room. That was fine with us as it meant we had a room to ourselves.
Ramona thought we were eating family style and had set us up to have the platter for six. We changed the order to a platter for two so everyone could order as they pleased. The platter for two was really two large platters and it could have easily served three or four. It had a large bratwurst, knockwurst, polish sausage, pork schnitzel, and a bowl of goulash beef accompanied by a tureen of hunter's gravy. A second platter with sides included fried potatoes, red cabbage, sour kraut, and spatzle.
We arrive around 12:30 and lingered well after dessert was done until around three. I think everyone found the food to be acceptable (I loved it), I know we found the company to be exceptional.
I took enough of the leftover platter home to have two more meals. At $33 for the platter this was a phenomenal value.
While it is a significant drive for those who live in Louisville, I suggest that there is not much better German food to be had. It's a must stop for those planning an overnight stay in French Lick/West Baden for some casino and spa action.
As we were leaving, Bill showed off a formidable pick axe that NJ had purchased on the way to lunch. I suggested that it would make me nervous if Donna suddenly expressed a need for a tool so handy for dispatching and disposal. Bill scoffed and said NJ wouldn't bother digging a new whole, she'd already pointed out a ditch handy to dispose of a carcass.
So, presuming Bill isn't part of the landscape, perhaps next month we'll all meet again at the River City Winery for crab cakes or Selena's for brunch. Cheers all!
