Root Cellar Kickstarter targets "food deserts"

by Robin Garr » Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:13 pm

If your interest in food extends to getting nutrition to hungry families, you'll want to check out this Kickstarter campaign by Louisville's Root Cellar, which would rehab an old bus as a mobile produce market for the city's "food desert" neighborhoods underserved by sources of healthy produce.

I'm making a contribution. I hope a lot of you will, too.

I love the idea driving this. My hope is that the demand is there to keep this thing alive if it gets off the ground. Eating healthfully is so very important, but the seduction of the convenience that fast food outlets provide is so strong, particularly in these areas, that I hope that the denizens of these food deserts will take advantage of the opportunity.

Really excited about this. Ron and the fellas at the Root Cellar are so awesome and really passionate. The two current retail locations are real local food meccas and if you get the hang of shopping seasonally have amazing products. I highly recommend them if you haven't been.

If someone can pull off such a neat addition to the city it's these guys and I wish them all the best. Think I may need to chip in on that kickstarter myself!

This. I remember seeing a story on the news a few months ago featuring one of the quick-stop store owners in one of the "food desert" neighborhoods who is participating in the Healthy Hometown program to try to bring in fresh produce, said that he isn't getting many people purchasing the produce and a lot of it was going bad.

So I hope if they are successful with the Kickstarter that there will be enough demand to support it.

This is one Kickstarter I was very happy to join in, albeit in a small way. My whole family has gotten into the eat local, shop local idea...just started a Grasshopper subscription as well.
