Upscale/fine dining suggestions

by Adam Smith » Mon Mar 25, 2013 6:44 pm

It's been a while since I've posted, I know, and even longer since I've been to an upscale spot here in Louisville so I was hoping you guys could help me out :)

I'm looking for somewhere, NOT downtown because the dinner will be the same day as Thunder, to have a dinner for 10-12 people to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday. My uncle is paying and his words were,"price is not an object." We've got family coming in from all over so we really want to make this a memorable evening for my grandmother

Thanks in advance guys!

"Price is no object." That sounds fun!

Corbett's is away from the fray on Thunder and always does a great job for special occasions. Personally, I love 211 Clover Lane. It's more centrally located and I'm never disappointed whether I go with a group or it's just my husband and me. It's always great.

Corbett's might be ideal. High quality, old school, and not likely to be as noisy as some of the other excellent but popular suburban locals like Mojito or Guacamole. Limestone might also be a particularly good fit. For a few less bucks, Blackstone Grille in Prospect?

Taylor has another good idea in 211. I understand that they just recently renovated.

Equus is nice, too, and quietly upscale casual. I think it took an elegance hit when it merged with Jack's, but it's still very nice and might suit your needs. Are Frankfort Avenue and Bardstown Road workable for you on Thunder night? Volare, Varanese, Lilly's, Asiatique ...

I think I would go with the sleeper, 211 Clover.

I love Varanese but it can be a little loud at times. Can make for difficult conversation with a large party at a big table. I'd go with Corbett's.

What about Village Anchor? It's far enough out and has a nice upscale ambience.

Nice suggestion. Great ambiance and great food. Now I'm rethinking that Corbett's recommendation.

I'd remove Volare, as it gets very noisy and tough to hear the others around the table with a bigger party.

Both Corbett's and Limestone have small dining rooms that you may be able to get. I'm especially thinking of corbett's "chef's table" which is really in a separate quiet room with two-way tv between you and the chef, and you can enjoy the quiet setting or talk to the chef if you wish! And, it's the perfect size for a party of 10-12. Limestone has separate rooms also, but their's are likely too large.

I know when my and friend's parents hit 90 their reaction to noisy crowded rooms was not always positive!

Corbett's (downstairs maybe?) and Limestone get my vote. Both are removed from the Thunder madness.

Nthing Corbett's.

If you do end up choosing Limestone, I would suggest being very clear on your preferences/desires as far as seating and reservation time. I have had two large group dinners at Limestone in the past year and experienced service issues with both. At one, we all arrived and were led to an awkward arrangement of chairs and couches centered around a table in a corner of the bar area. The dining room was mostly empty; we requested to be seated there, instead. The host at first refused and said that I, when making the reservation, had requested to be seated in the bar area - quite false. The bar area never came up in the conversation when making the reservation. We were eventually seated in the main dining room, but not without a bit of fuss. The host repeatedly insisted that it was my fault and that I had asked that we be seated in the bar area. Rather ironic, since we were there to celebrate a close friend's 6-month anniversary of sobriety, and no one ordered a beverage from the bar. At the other dinner, our reservation time was entered on their calendar incorrectly even though we'd been clear when making the reservation and had even called the night before to confirm the time. I do enjoy Limestone's food, but I won't risk going back with a large group. I've had several special occasion dinners at Corbett's, on the other hand, and had a perfectly lovely experience every time.

The chef's Table at Corbett's would be truly special for your group- very special but not stuffy. And given the multi-generational group, I think it would be ideal for conversation/celebration- making it enjoyable for all ( particularly those with any hearing issues).

Volare also has a separate private dining room- but it has a larger capacity. You'd have to check on what their minimum group size is.
