Need a bakery in the Summit area?

by Ellen P » Sat Mar 23, 2013 2:43 pm

Not just a cupcake bakery. My family went to bakery every week: kuchens, donuts, rye bread, potato bread. (Also, remember getting milk delivered and produce carts going up and down the streets:-) Maybe it's just as well. I would have to exercise even more than I do now:-)

There's a bakery area in the new Earth Fare. I'm not sure what all they have, but it's a nice store. I don't know of anything local out that way.

Three things that will probably prevent that from ever happening.
Commercial real estate out that way is crazy expensive.
The profit margin on baked goods is slimmer than most restaurant margins
Baking is very hard work and becoming a lost art.

We are actually lucky to still have some fine bakeries in this city. Blue Dog, Nord's and Plehn's are all good for certain things.

I remember Small Times Bakery that was in the current Queenies location off Taylorsville rd was originally supposed to have a location at Norton Commins. To Dan's point I think lease problems kept that from happening. I miss those folks. Good people with really good product!

Ellen,
I live near by and there really isn't one. Earthfare breads are very good, but they don't have much of what you suggest. I'd drive to Plehn's.

But positive news on mike delivery: I just got a note that Erhlers is now delivering to the Summit area. You can get your milk delivered along with certain local products, including I believe, Blue Dog Bread.

Thanks for all the comments. I understand the small margins. You can't risk it. I'm fantasizing about the old days. I do buy some things at EarthFare. I'd probably start buying/eating donuts again, so it's just as well:-)

Just for the sake of conversation, what would be the realistic price that most of you here would be willing to pay for the following items, knowing that they would be fresh made from scratch and not par-baked from frozen or made from a mix like grocery store bakery items are?

A dozen doughnuts
A 1/2 dozen Kaiser or Bulkie rolls
A French loaf
A dozen dinner rolls
A 1/2 decorated sheet cake
A decorated cupcake

This is not exactly in the Summit area but the Q&A Sweet Treats (http://qasweettreats.com/) in LaGrange is fantastic and may fill your needs. It probably isn't that much further from the Summit to LaGrange than to St. Matt. Andrea has wonderful breads, cookies, cakes and many other goodies. A great locally owned business and a "sometime" Hotbytes participant! Give them a try....
