Milkwood

Went this evening with two friends prior to seeing Actor Theater's new play 'Girlfriend'.
One word: Phenomenal

In a town filled with some amazingly talented chefs and recognized around the country as a foodie destination, it was quite simply phenomenal.
From the unique pre-dinner cocktails, to the appetizers, to the main courses and finally the desserts it was all exceptional.

I was even delightfully impressed with how the wine menu was laid out. Rather than your standard dueling lists of white versus reds, the menu breaks them down into further subcategories based on titles such as "Earthy", "Spicy", etc. The same was done with the mixed drink menu which highlighted the areas of the tongue (sweet, bitter, sour, salty, etc) the drink would entice.

You must put this place on your list of must visits. I will edit tomorrow with some highlights of what we ate but its late, and Im off to bed.

(Having to go completely off memory since their menu isnt posted online. And the amount of drinks is making the memory part fuzzy lol)

So for apps last night we had....
A grilled romaine salad
A shrimp sausage (delicate yet full of flavor)
Smashed potatoes with octopus bacon. (amazing great mix of hearty and salty)

Main courses included
the crispy duck for two
the pork burger on a pretzel bun with aioli and kimchi (OMG sooo good), i ordered the herby/citrusy cottage fries on the side
scallops and pork belly

desserts we had were:
The grits and sorghum icecream with crushed berries
The doughnut holes with ginger and chocolate
The cheese cake.
Everything was great but I think the doughnut holes were the winner.

One of our favorite cocktails was called the Southern Exposure. Bourbon based it had a great flavor. I dont even like bourbon and I had two of them! :D

$20's for entrees and they had an amazing prix fixe menu for those attending the play. $28 got you an app, entree and dessert. You can not beat the prix fixe for the quality of the food you are getting at that price.

Total bill for the wife and minus tip came to the $115 range if I remember correctly but that included 2 apps, 2 entrees, 3 mixed drinks, and a bottle of wine.

From my experience this past Sunday, there were only a couple of items in the $20 and above range. Prime rib and the fish special, if I remember correctly. They have a nice list of small plates in the $7-10 range, and a number of entrees in the $12-15ish range. The price point they described in the press release Robin posted in the earlier thread really seemed perfect for the theatre-going experience. Sometimes you want a nice, full meal beforehand. A lot of times, you just want a couple small plates or a lower-ticket entree to nosh on afterward while you digest the show over cocktails. They've nailed this menu approach.

Also important to note is how friendly and welcoming the staff is, from hostess to server to manager to everyone who pitches in and delivers a drink or picks a plate up off your table. Classy and impressive.

I think they might have completely redone the menu then since you were in Antonia?

They didnt offer small plates on Friday night other than traditional apps. Is that what you meant? Because when I hear "small plates" I think tappas rather than the traditional "appetizer" which is what they offer.

Nor did they have prime rib on the menu, everything was much more eclectic.

They posted their menu on Facbook the other day. It's the same as when I was in a week and a half ago. I misspoke when I called their Rib-Eye Steak "prime rib." I remembered the rib part! :) The "Starters" were described by both their press release and our server as "small plates" meant to be shared around the table, which is why I referred to them as such, even though that's not what they're specifically called on the menu. We tried the frog's legs, Vietnamese sausage, fried chicken and waffle and the smashed potatoes. The potatoes were my favorite, mostly due to the octopus bacon. Of course we had to ask what the heck that was. Get the explanation when you go, and then try it. The menu is short on veggie options, but I sampled my friend's Roasted Veggies entree, and it was both beautiful and delicious. MilkWood is now on my list of Places that Do Tofu Right. It was light and crispy and perfect.

I'm glad the menu is up, because its helped jog my memory. I didn't see a drinks menu on their Facebook page, but I remember loving my Southern Exposition - it involved bourbon and fennel.

Aww gotcha! And I agree the potatoes and the Southern Exposition are both excellent!
