Giving Back at Thanksgiving

by SusieLeiper » Sun Nov 18, 2007 10:28 pm

Hello all. I am new to Louisville, just arrived from the lovely Lakes Region of New Hampshire. I am living in downtown and really enjoying getting to know your city. As a foodie, I really appreciate this site too!

I have tried hard every Thanksgiving/Christmas, no matter where I may be around the world, to find a soup kitchen or senior center where I may volunteer for that day. I have not been able to locate (on-line) any information about such an opportunity here. Can anyone help me?

Best wishes and tashi delek,

Susie

Hi Susie,

Welcome to the forum. You might consider contacting the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville: http://www.cathedraloftheassumption.org/. I have helped prepare and serve lunch there before with my nephew as part of his high school's community service program. I don't know what their Thanksgiving day plans are though.

Hello all. Just in case anyone else is interested, here is the nice response I received after contacting Wayside Mission via Ed's link above. See you at the "big breakfast?

From Katherine at Wayside Mission Volunteer Center:

We would love to have your help here on Thanksgiving and any other time you are willing to give your services to us.

Thanksgiving is going to be a busy day and we can use all the help we can get. Meal times are 7am for the big breakfast, noon for the big dinner, and 5 for the second dinner. We are also going to be decorating and putting up our Christmas trees. We will also have lots of prep and clean up to do all over the mission.

As you know you will go to 432 E. Jefferson Street. You are welcome to come at any time during the day and stay as long as you would like. If you plan on serving I would recommend showing up no later then 30 mins prior to serving time. However, I still can't guarantee that you will be serving. But like I said there are still a lot of other things that we will need your help with.

So please provide me with your contact name, number, and address so I can put you on this list.
