1950's and 60's Louisville Restaurants

by Nancy A » Tue Feb 05, 2013 6:39 pm

Does anybody have pictures of old Louisville restaurants from the 50's and 60's? I have a whole list and would love to see if what I remember is accurate.

The University of Louisville library photographic archives are an amazing resource. I've included a link to the search page below. You can select all of the collections and run a search on "restaurants". I found some great photos from the 1950s and 1960s. The link:
http://digital.library.louisville.edu/cdm/search/collection/royal/cosuppress/

The collections include a couple of undated photos of the Willow Lake Tavern, but the archive estimates they were taken in the 1960s. They are linked here:
http://digital.library.louisville.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/royal/id/16927/rec/32

The images are available for purchase. If they have the negatives (remember those?), they can produce really high quality prints.

Thanks for the suggestion. I remember so many places like Luvisi's, Leo's Hideaway and Gruber's where I spent time with my parents.

The most recent EATS special edition from Louisville Magazine included a section on by-gone restaurants.

see the "dearly departed" section of the online edition: http://eats.epubxp.com/i/83530

I believe there were also some follow-up letters to the magazine on this topic in the following regular edition(s).

we received this magazine out of the blue, I think perhaps because we bought tix to a concert at the Brown.

Joel,

I don't know about your brown tix, but it is a membership benefit of being a member/donating to WFPL/WFPK- public radio. That's how we get ours. :D

Very cool, Jay!
As someone who didn't grow up here, where were they taken? The only Kunz's I knew was at 3rd & Market.

Before my parents married, they used to like to go to the Kunz's which I think was next to the Seelbach. It had a fire in the 80's and that space became a narrow parking lot. You can see the outline of the old building on the side walls.

Wow a blast from the past. I took a prom date to the old Kunz The Dutchman next to the Seelbach.

Is there anyone who remembers Luvisi's, Leo's Hideaway or Grubers? If not, maybe you can ask your parents?

My mom remembers and is curious about Luvisi's. She also would like to know where exactly Joe Z's pizza was.
