Don't know....maybe it's just me  , I was born and raised in Hikes Point, but that part of the world has changed quite a bit in the last decade and a half.
Quite a bit of robberies in the plazas, hell the Walmart on Newburg Rd closes at 11:00 p.m. I think?
No idea if that has hurt them??

Thanks for the post, Debbie. I just heard it from another source and was trying to reach management without success.

As others have said, the restaurant and the neighborhood have changed, but it's still quite a local tradition, and a shame to see it go. They fared pretty well, good for what it was on my last (no rating) Voice-Tribune review:

I am sorry to hear this because of the vast history of the building, however, the few times I have dined there I was underwhelmed. I do know that it was a haunt for many in the area. But that's why Louisville has such a vast array of choices in local dining options.

If anyone ever gets an explanation for this, I'd like to know. I meet with a group of people there once a month, and this comes as quite a shock. Nothing at all was said last weekend.

Also with that being said, we now need to find another location with a room suitable for about 50-60 people tops for a once monthly get-together.

Well, for years they had the best steak for the money....not necessarily "the best", but it was good for price paid. The appetizers and the veggies were good too. The stuffed baked potato was excellent. Times change, demographics change, neighborhoods change, owners and key personnel change. The place is simply not like it was for a variety of reasons.

We went there for the first and only time last year. I'm sure we would have gone again this year. I thought it was charming; old school, quaint, with a touch of run down elegance.

We very much enjoyed it, and we're sorry to see it go.

I talked to a friend who was a regular (her husband is a meat and potatoes type of guy) and she said it really hadn't been the same since John sold it a few years ago. That said, she did say it was sad to see a Louisville institution close so abruptly (wait - where have we heard that before?).

My parents seem to recall another restaurant at this spot before John E's. Does anyone remember? They told me a story of one Derby their party being refused service because one of the women was wearing a pantsuit. It would have been the mid-70's.

John E's was at the place where Bill Boland's used to be.
