If Pastor Bell is truely Christian, she should get that poor girl a job.

This. But that assumes the accuracy of your first clause. :P

This was no "lapse in judgement"- she called for folks to be fired over this.

Unbelievable. So church groups are supposed to be excluded from the posted mandatory tip for groups, and you can treat people as badly as you want and claim to be an effective pastor?

My wife has been watching this unfold. Regardless of what the customer did, shame on Applebee's for caving in to her ridiculous demand. The whole thing has clearly blown up in both the restaurant and the pastor's faces. What were they thinking?

It makes me extremely angry. I cannot stand it when servers get the shaft. I have, at times, confronted bad tippers on behalf of my servers. Never a pleasurable experience but I always felt it is better to stand up for your own than loose a customer.

Putting herself above the norm is no way to lead people. Pastor Bell needs some bible study.

I'm of the opinion that Pastor Bell is probably "Canadian"

Part of what makes me angry is the I am a pastor and Pastor Bell has put herself in the position of representing us. That REALLY infuriates me. It gives the impression that clergy are cheap and sanctimonious. Actually, some are cheap and some are sanctimonious. She happens to be both. I find it amazing that the restaurant put ONLY 18% as the tip. I would expect that to have been at least 20-25%. This fool pastor wanted an entirely different staff there for the next time she went and, obviously it cost the server her job. The pastor owes the young woman an apology and to literally demand that Applebee's hire the woman back. To me, that would be a church and a restaurant to completely avoid. It's shameful.

There is a local Reverend who frequents local high end restaurants and who drives the nicest of cars (bentley, benz etc.). I know for a fact that this individual tips less than 15% (and I'm being generous) on a regular basis. He drinks the most expensive cognacs and smokes expensive cigars and parks at a table until after closing and stiff the wait staff regularly. I have heard this from numerous servers/managers. Pretty sad I think.

When I was in college my first serving job was at KT's. I think half of Louisville's service industry has done a stint there at one time. Anyway, one Sunday brunch I was tipped in "Jesus Bucks" by an older couple. Monopoly-like money with a big Jesus head in the middle. Seriously?

As they were walking out I noticed they left an umbrella under the table. I kept it as my tip. Karma?

As both a pastor and foodie (is there a better word for foodie than foodie? I hate that word), this whole thing makes me sad. It's ridiculous that anyone would do that to a server. No excuse, period. I'm all to aware of the rep that church goers often have with the service industry. I just had breakfast with a shift manager at a place that gets a big after church crowd. He was seriously considering writing an email to a pastor informing him that his congregants weren't doing his church any favors with their behavior.
As to the original incident, I hate this person lost their job, but it does raise a question. If one of your employees did something similar as far as posting a receipt with a customers name or information on it, what would you do? Just curious how this should/would be handled.

Just a little more info on Alois Bell. Her "church" is a storefront that boasts a congregation of about 20 people. From the videos I've seen her sermons consist of incoherent rambling with each line punctuated by an emphatic "HA!". http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t1-bhKg7cvA

While I agree that it is the company's prerogative to take disciplinary action against an employee who shares personal guest information with the general public, I love seeing servers exposing these jackasses.

There used to be a site called Bitterwaitress.net. They had a section called The Shitty Tipper Database where servers could go and post horror stories about the worst of their guests including their bill and tip totals. There were liability issues that led to its extinction but it was awesome while it lasted. These ass clowns might think twice about their behavior if they knew they would be publically exposed.
