Frolio's Pizza

by Adam C » Wed Jan 30, 2013 1:33 pm

I moved to the Camp Taylor neighborhood this past summer and I am kinda surprised by the lack of restaurants nearby. Shiraz, Jimmy John's, Wendy's, and Frolio's... And that's about it. Has anyone been to Frolio's recently? We have so many good pizza options here now I wonder how Frolio's stacks up. I have heard mixed reviews... If anyone has a tip, let me know!

Not lately, and I'd be interested in a report. We went a few years ago (!) and found it okay but not really memorable. A standard Louisville pie, average quality, in iconic family-pizzeria surroundings.

But don't rely on that ... it could have gone either way in the years since then.

I have fond memories of the place from my childhood, but I've gotta say the pizza is pretty terrible now. May not have been better when I was a kid, for that matter, but I didn't have much to compare it to at that point. Goopy cheese, overly sweet sauce and cardboard like crust.

However, if you head over to the Preston side of Camp Taylor, Mirage is located just inside the expressway, and it is by far my favorite Meditterranean food in town. (And very reasonably priced to boot.)

I give Frolio's a solid thumbs down. I went there for the lunch buffet once and was underwhelmed. You can buy a frozen pizza that is better.
However in the same neighborhood, I do kind of like Hometown Pizza. Their lunch buffet is fairly decent and if you don't see what you like on the buffet pizza wise, you can ask them to make one to put out with your choice of toppings. Their Buffalo Chicken pie is not too bad.
I have to agree with Clay. Mirage across the street is a hidden gem in that part of town.

I agree with Dan, but offer this one caveat: I would leave that area for pizza. I have not been to that Hometown but every experience at other Hometown's has far exceeded the two times I went to Frolio's. On the positive side, I do like that dimly lit, old school pizza joint atmosphere st Frolio's and have had nothing but good service there.

Frolio's has dropped in quality, the crust appears to be frozen, not much taste to the sauce. We have really enjoyed Hometown, not the best, but good, solid pizza.

Yes! J Gumbo's.. forgot them. Sonoma is ok. I'm weird with coffee. The loyalty factor plays a big role. I'm a Red Hot Roaster's guy and really prefer it ONLY from them. But Sonoma is ok. Good place to meet people. It's almost always sparse and mellow in there. They also have a meeting room and free wi-fi.

And I forgot Lolita's on purpose. Oh boy. I used to LOVE going there but hadn't been in quite a while. So when we were moving in to our house, I decided to go get a carne asada burrito. I have an appetite like a billy goat and I couldn't finish it. Meat tasted as if it had been stewing in a crock pot all day in water sauce and was shredded to tiny strands, onions and peppers in huge amounts to compensate for the lack of meat... I didn't enjoy it. I'll give them another shot at redemption when I am brave enough. But for now we have been going to either Mirage or Zaytun Cafe (TRIBAL FRIES!) for our "neighborhood" eats.
