Shalimar recommendations

I have recently joined a British and Proud FB page located in Lousivile. About 25 of us British expats are going for a curry at Shalimar on Saturday. This will be my first visit, and indeed my first Indian in America. Any suggestions for me?

Alison,

Check if they do their lunch buffet on Saturday. I can't make a specific recommendation on a curry, but I recently had their lunch buffet- Wow! I usually avoid buffets but the food was very, very good with a great level of spices. I thought the food was much more interesting than several of the other highly rated Indian Buffets in town, and the price was outstanding for the quality and quantity of food.

If you make it a lunch meeting then you can partake of the buffet! They always have the following Chicken dishes, Tandoori, Tikka Masala, Curry and Pakora. Sometimes they will have a Lamb or Goat dish and an assortment of Vegetarian things.
If you go for dinner I really like the Lamb Biryani and Mango Milkshakes!

Suggestion 1: Call a day or two ahead. 25 is a lot.

Suggestion 2: Get a coupon as they come out regularly enough that we end up not being able to use them all before they expire. Not sure if they are distributed on the Sunny Side but odds are some of your brethren on this side have extras to share. They give $1 off on the lunch buffet or a buy 1 get 1 free entree for dinner.

Suggestion 3: If you order off the menu and want it more like Indian food in the U.K. you'll need to ask for it extra hot. The buffet is tasty spicy but not hot spicy like you'd expect someplace like London.

Suggestion 4: Make your second Indian in America either DakShin or Little India Cafe.

Since you haven't had Indian food in the US, you'd do yourself a favor to try DakShin at some point.

Sorry for the thread creep.....that is all....carry on. 8)

Edit; Just saw Lonnie's post.....yes, Little India Cafe too.

Ahem, it is the duty of all Brit ex-pats worldwide to complain loudly about the mildness of any curry served outside of the UK. It says so on the back cover of your passport.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have reserved, yes, back room I think. We are meeting at 7pm so unfortunately won't be able to partake of the buffet. Will def try Little India or DakShin at some time. I am leaning towards either the chicken curry or the chicken tika with curry sauce. Have to try the onion bajis of course and an Indian beer. I am looking forward to it very much. I never knew there were so many of us around here. My social life is going to improve vastly. Next meeting is Molly Malones on the 9th March.

I always get the Bhindi Masala (okra) and it is the best I have had. Many of the Indian restaurants in the city don't seem to have this dish on their menu, although I am sure there are some out there I haven't tried.
