Okay, guys-I just finished reading all the overnight comments and I'm bawling now. You guys are the best!!! This has been a horrendous time already ( she has no insurance, no power of attorney, etc) and it's only the beginning.

I can't tell you how much it means to have you guys supporting us right now.

I have seen Thick-It and similar products at Walgreen's. My M-I-L has similar issues a few years ago after a fall and brain surgery. She fully recovered and I hope the same for your situation.

Deb, I have some contacts in the UK Medical Center food services department. PM me at kjresener@gmail.com and I'm betting I can hook you guys up. You shouldn't have to purchase any thickener etc. Also, Jason gave great advice. I wouldn't advise bringing any food in from the outside until she gets off the thickened liquids diet, aspiration can easily occur when someone is compromised in swallowing.

As part of her discharge planning ask for a dietitian consult too. A lot of times the sheet they give for diets is very broad. If she is still having any issues at discharge, you need specific information. If they refer to any after-care there may be dietetic service available.

Thanks again for all the fabulous suggestions! I bought a selection of juices, boost, baby food and Thick it based on your recommendations ( oh, and I made butternut squash soup). All of which will be checked with the nutritionist/ speech pathologist before anything is given to her.

The good news is that this afternoon/evening she ate some pudding , part of an ice pop (while still firm) , and some mashed strawberries and bananas with the nutritionist's blessing!
