Again, I'm not a member and I could be wrong about this, but I think the "dining room" to which women aren't admitted is the one that's adjacent to the men's locker room. And I don't recall seeing any doors or anything in between the two.

Isn't it a private club? Plenty of private women only clubs out there that I can't join.

Such as?

Really, if you're gonna troll that hard, at least make an effort.

Well I don't actually troll. There's private women only clubs all over the world. My girlfriend's a member of one. It wouldn't occur to me to get uptight about not being allowed. After all, it's a women's club.

On edit here's my huge effort. All of five seconds on a google search. Now I'm spent.

I, personally don't really see anything wrong with private men's or women's clubs, although I have qualms about the long history of racial segregation.

My girlfriend has a monthly girl's night out with her friends that I'm not allowed to attend, and i think it's basically the same idea. Just my opinion though, and I hold no memberships in any exclusionary clubs, nor do I have the desire too.

But you just did! And then you tried to rationalize it by googling some article about women getting together in a women-friendly space, as if that's in any way equal to the years and years of racist, sexist, exclusionary discrimination as practiced by the Pendennis Club in Louisville. Between this and "I know about Metromix -- I'm in it every month," HotBytes is reaching new highs in obliviousness! A+! Good job!

Well I certainly agree with you if you were talking about a public institution or location. However we are talking about a private club where where your membership is nominated by and approved by a committee of the members. These places generally aren't really open to the public and the membership fees and dues are usually pretty hefty by most people's standards. There are usually certain dress codes and expected rules of decorum that are usually adhered to as part of your membership and this kind of thing is sometimes part of it.

They are most certainly elitist, I'll give you that, but I don't see most of them as being really discriminatory in their membership practices like they used to be. Things have changed a lot over the years.
Personally, I don't see it being any different from having membership in a number of gender specific fraternal organizations like the Junior League, Shiners or Masons.

Joel you're conflating issues badly. I simply responded to Deb as it was my impression she thinks she should be eligible for a private club regardless of gender. It is not particularly troll-like to suggest that she's wrong by way of an undeniable FACT. Gender-specific private clubs are in fact quite legal and relativelyl prevalent throughout the world for both males and females. As mentioned, my GF's in one, and as a man I simply don't qualify. I'm a member of a "club" or probably better a "society" which has no women members and never will. Sometimes that's just the way it is.

Other than the gender specificity, I make no comparison between the Pendennis club with whatever racist history it might have, and some cliquey New York all womens clubs. And frankly, I'd bet good money that some of those clubs only accept white chicks that went to Vassar, Wellesley, or Radcliffe and belonged to "X" sorority i.e. they're probably pretty exclusive themselves.

And FWIW if the Pendennis club is in such dire straits to justify one last all-male refuge that they have to park a "dining room" in front of the open door to a locker room.... well I don't know why anyone would be put off by not being able to join. Maybe it's just me, but I've been on a fair number of nude beaches and I'm pretty sure the last thing I want to see when tucking into my Beef Wellington is some 80 year old's gear flailing about. That's pretty sad.

LOL.Ditto.

I never said there couldn't/shouldn't be gender specific social clubs- I said it's discriminatory ( which it is) . I did not grow up here, but from what I've been told, Pendennis used to be the business place to be seen/ make deals- by excluding people you are excluding them from that ability. I disagree with that. Now that Pendennis takes alot of money from women as well as men to join, I find declaring certain floors off-limits to female members gross and demeaning. Personally, I wouldn't join or attend a function there if those are their core values- just that simple.

Well here is one place that women will "enjoy" equal rights.
