Matthew at Queenies (later Windy City, now, alas, defunct) used to do something akin to this although not quite as radical (in the good sense). He basically tithed to local charities and community groups by turning over all proceeds to local institutions several days a month.

Thinking aloud, the O'Sheas do good work in this department as well.

This model takes it a step beyond, though, operating as a non-profit and donating all proceeds. I'd get behind something like that if it happened here, with extra credit if they also hired from - and gave job training to - their beneficiary community.
