Decca Restaurant and Lounge on East Market Street will screen the film “My Darling Clementine” featuring Louisville’s own Victor Mature.

Victor Mature, a Louisville native and Shelby Park resident, left for Hollywood in the late 1930’s and lived the American dream of being discovered and rising to fame during the golden age of Hollywood as one of the first A-list film actors. In celebrating the centennial of his birth this year, the Greater Louisville Pride Foundation … aka “Hometown Heroes” has joined the Shelby Park Neighborhood Association in highlighting his career and ties to Louisville by honoring the actor and philanthropist with the 20th image in the Louisville’s Own series.

Decca Restaurant will host an evening of film, libations and hors d’oeuvres to raise funds to produce and install the image in the Shelby Park neighborhood. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 24, in Decca’s Cellar venue. There will be two limited showings of “My Darling Clementine.” the film classic directed by John Ford and starring both Henry Fonda and Victor Mature as the original Doc Holiday! The first of two screenings begins at 6:30 and will be followed by a second showing at 9:30 pm. Join us a half-hour before for libations and hors d’oeuvres (brought by Korbel, Bleu Sky Rye and Decca).

Immediately following the showing will be a talk back with Louisville's George Parker, who is currently working on a PBS documentary about KMI. (One of the many educational institutions attended by Victor)

I like this idea. Maybe we can get one of the city's delicious Mexican and Mexican-inspired restaurants to host a screening of The Wild Bunch to celebrate Warren Oates. Or maybe we'll all gather at Dizzy Whiz for a drive-in screening of Two-Lane Blacktop.

Or maybe a night of Southern inspired cuisine and a viewing of Gone With the Wind honoring longtime Actors Theater director Victor Jory who played Tara's foreman Jonas Wilkerson.

Or a Foster Brooks put crawl.

Or a Ned Beatty Deliverance pig roast with White Lightnin' on the side.

My family was close to Warren Oates. He and my uncles hung out at Jack Fry's with the original Jack Fry. There should at least be a plaque in front of the restaurant. He and his family lived on Christy.
