Green Leaf Vegetarian Bistro

by Richard S. » Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:57 pm

I saw today that the Green Leaf Vegetarian Bistro in the Cardinal Towne center near U of L is being transformed into Mt. Fuji Japanese restaurant. I figured if Papalino's couldn't make it the vegetarian place wasn't going to last. They added some chicken and seafood options a few months ago, but apparently that wasn't enough. I liked the food, although I think faux meat in a vegetarian restaurant is a bit on the hypocritical side.

I'm a longtime vegetarian but I walked in there once and walked right back out and went to the Vietnamese restaurant next door.

I didn't think it was a very appealing restaurant, either. Not because it was vegetarian, but because it wasn't very good.
I'm not sure I see the hypocrisy in meat analogues, though. Is it hypocritical for a pregnant woman to dink a non-alcoholic beer, or for Campbell's to sell mock turtle soup? Basically, I don't get why anyone would get worked up about what someone else eats.

I'm not surprised, but that sucks we're losing another veggie place, although it sounds like they ditched the all-vegetarian idea pretty quick. It was cheap, and the food was okay - I liked getting 'soy steak' and so forth, but they had weird hours, a terrible website, and staff who were not knowledgeable about veganism at all. A couple months after I went in there I had one of the women working there say to me "you're vegan - shouldn't you know what you can and can't eat?" after we asked them about a particular dish being vegan or not. Sigh.

This. I <3 Heart & Soy. I think I'll have a big bowl of Hue for lunch.

Mt. Fuji has great priced options for students. It's not DKD level sushi, but it's easily better than the offering on campus. The hibachi was low cost and very tasty as well. They are keeping the bubble teas on the menu as well - mainly just a menu change and name change from what I saw. For $35 for three people with 3 bubble teas, 3 entrees, and 2 appetizers it's very reasonable for the college crowd in the area.
