I seem to remember Robin warning us all this would happen when Trader Joe's came to town.

Sad- but they are retirement age, and want to retire. Running a food store is very hard work- they've earned it!
It'd be great for the neighborhood if someone bought it as is- and let them go enjoy their retirement.

I've been a customer my whole life. I use to ride my bike there and buy candy. Now I drive my truck there and get my favorite sandwich - country ham and roast turkey on whole wheat with mayo. I will miss it for sure.

Buried in the article is this silver lining:

"After March 16, the store's future is uncertain...Burger says there's also been interest from those who would like to buy the store as is and keep it a market."

Oh, sorry - I guess I put it there because it seems pretty clear this doesn't have much to do with competition from Trader Joe's or anywhere else. The owners have had a good, full career, have reached retirement age, and have decided to close it down. Which they're fully entitled to do.

I suppose it's a little sad from the standpoint of losing a local, community asset. But in another sense it gives me more of the bittersweet, full-of-respect feeling you get at the passing of an elderly person who has lived a long, full life and is clearly ready to go. It's a sadness that feels full, complete, not the empty, resentful pain of a beloved community-landmark retailer whose time was cut short by encroachment from a new big-box store.

No disrespect meant by the winky.

This news made me so sad. When I first started cooking, Burger's, Doll's, and Lots-A-Pasta were my go-to places for gourmet food and hard to find items. Burgers and Dolls were the only places I could find cilantro at the time (among other things) and I feel like it's another loss of an era. Happy for them for their retirement, just sad on a personal level.

Wasn't "Formerly Myra's" on that corner, once upon a time?

Correctamundo, with a little nuance: Burger's was in the back half of the building, Myra's in front. Myra's had been around for years as a short-order diner; then Bim Dietrich turned it upscale, re-named it "Formally Myra's," and opened it in the ... um, middle to late '70s? ... as one of our first modern bistros. I think it may have even preceded the Bristol.

Myra's was hugely popular ... the whole modern wave of fancy eateries really was just getting rolling around this point when the first wave of baby boomers was approaching 30 and creating a market for something our parents never knew they wanted.

Burger's drew some enmity at the time by tossing Myra's out at lease renewal time so they could expand, but Bim went on to do a lot of other fine things as one of the founding daddies of the modern era in Louisville dining.
