Holiday "Hot" Tips

by Greg R. » Fri Dec 21, 2012 3:06 pm

Team food, I have a couple of items to pass along I though you might want to be aware of concerning food related gift giving.

I was out and about buying gift cards from our locals for the boss man and stumbled on some great deals. First, at La Coop, when I purchased a $100 gift card I got a $20 card kicked back to me! Who dosn't like giving a gift that gives back to you? I sure as hell do anyway. :D

BTW, we ate there last night and the food was unbelievably good. I believe our server told us that every Thursday night they offer a burger special (I'd call ahead to make sure I heard that right). Last night it was a nearly one pound (so we were told - not sure if it was that big- but is was big) burger that was a combination of ground ribeye, filet, and strip (i think). I only got to eat a quarter of it off someone else's plate (you gonna finish that? ) but it was out of this world! May well be the best in the 'ville.

Everything else we ordered was very, very good too. Cheese plates, cocktails, salads, charcuterie (sweet and savory opton)...all beautifully presented and tasty. The only slight disappointment was the duck confit, ironically ordered by me. It was perfectly prepared and good, but it's duck on a bed of white beans. I'm not exactly sure what type of flavor explosion I was expecting there (if that's your kind of thing I'm sure it won't disappoint). That one's on me. If La Coop is off your radar put it back on...i'm glad we did.

Speaking of duck....the home of my all time favorite duck dish, Volare, has a similar special. I purchased a $100 gift card and was able to buy a second $100 for $60. Yup, I could give that card to someone, but I think I'll keep it. As an added bonus I came into work to find my team had purchased ME a card from Volare! They know me well. This is another place that needs to be on your radar. Top tip: Sit at the bar, listen to live jazz, order from the best small plates menu in town and enjoy half price wine.

Merry Christmas everyone!

One important thing to add...

Giving gift cards to the locals is not just a great way to directly support them it is also a great way to introduce far east end chain lovers to the locals. I can't tell you how many people I've "converted" by "forcing" them to give it a try.

There are a lot of people out there who think the independants are for rich, snobby globetrotters and their like...or think their clothes aren't fancy enough, or their politics liberal enough( ) or whatever... Once they see reality and taste the goodness of our hometown favorites they are fans for life.

How many conversions can you make this year?

Good stuff, Greg, and thanks for sharing it. That's an excellent suggestion, and another point: Gift carts make great last-minute gifts that don't require fighting the mall crowds!
