Kathy, happy birthdays to all concerned! I wish there were more exciting choices for you in the South End, but whether you're talking about the South End of the city or Okolona/Fairdale/PRP/Valley, I'm afraid it's mostly chains. There's Texas Roadhouse and Logan's Roadhouse along Dixie and Longhorn and a Texas Roadhouse in the Outer Loop area near Preston, if any of those appeal. I can't think of any closer in to the Churchill Downs and U of L area.

Would a run out to Shepherdsville suit you? Cattleman's gets excellent reviews and is locally owned and operated.

Texas Roadhouse on Dixie is the only place I can think of. But you've maybe already thought of that.

I had the same thought about Cattleman's, but wasn't sure if it would be close enough. It's not too terribly far to go for a good steak at a locally owned place, really.

Well, using Iroquois Park as reference point for "South End," it's 16.6 miles and 23 minutes (per Google Maps) to Cattlemen's in Shep. It's 17 miles and 27 minutes to Del Frisco's, and only 12.5 miles but still 26 minutes to Jeff Ruby's.

Yeah, just depends on how far south in the South End they're starting from. Shepherdsville is only like 15 minutes from Fairdale.

Well, apparently neither of us is having a busy day.

Point is, sadly, there's not a real good answer for them within the South End, but if their starting point is in the southern county, then Cattleman's seems like absolutely the best bet.

I am interested in giving Cattleman's a try, but until then I like the Outback on Fern Valley Road better than the Dixie Highway or Okolona options.

Cattleman's has a salad bar reminiscent of Fifth Quarter's.

Too late for the OP, but I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Cattleman's location that has opened on Hurstbourne in the former Max & Erma's location.

Basically a good point, with one caveat: She was trying to keep it in the South End.
