Ballad of a Crappy Lunch: Mellow Mushroom

by Will Terry » Sat Dec 15, 2012 6:06 pm

I regret moving away from my local only mindset...

My wife and I needed a place to grab a late lunch today, and hadn't been to the Mellow Mushroom in St. Matthews. In Nashville, we have had nothing but good experiences with MM, and so we figured a quick lunch would be an easy option... instead we got mediocrity across the board.

We ordered:
White Pizza
Caesar Salad
Chicken Wings

The caesar was excellent, and if I ever get tricked into eating in MM again, I will probably just get a large salad.

The white pizza was fine. Decent even.

The chicken wings were terrible. The arrived at the table cold... I sent them back. They came back lukewarm, and were the same wings that had been brought out the first time. I know this, because the chicken wing I had bit into was in the basket... either that or they had a hungry chef. They were also just bad wings. Scrawny, breaded, bland with flaccid skin... I had significantly better wings the night before at FABD.

No apology for the cold wings, continued inattentive service... and to cap it all of, it was over $30 for the meal.

We should have just gone to Coal's... sorry for the rant, just a frustrating experience.

that's always disappointing.

I think it's worth sending a letter to their national / corporate office about this.

The prices are outrageous for what you get there IMO. The freaking pizzas are all crust. I gave it two tries, won't be going back. Too many other good pizza places in the city.

Is this one set to the tune of " Mellow Yellow"? ...

I filled out an online survey and won't be going back. They will be fine without me, and I will do just fine without them.

Been there three times...once to the Blankenbaker location and twice to St. Matts and I've gotta say my experience/s were quite satisfactory. The price points seemed to be comparable to most places in the same genre.

Yeah, this time I have to agree with the guy from Garage Logic. Now, in St. Matthews where you've got Coals and DiOrios (and also estimable pizzae at BBC or Cafe Lou Lou) within crawling distance, the Mushroom wouldn't be my first choice. But I've been pleased with the food and the mood on every visit, and didn't feel the price out of line.

We haven't been to the one in St Matthews but have been to the Blankenbaker multiple times and have always had a nice meal. From what I've seen the Blankenbaker location is much more family oriented than the St Matthews location which is only logical. They also both have different owners.
