info on donating food for Christmas Day meal?

by Willie Myers » Fri Dec 14, 2012 1:32 pm

((Robin, this thread's even *less* "Restaurant"-related than my last one ("pinwheels" - btw, I got *great* responses to that one and got my problem sorted out!! many thanks!), but again, it it food-related and I really down know where else to post it? Please feel free to move, if you think it needs a better home!))

H'lo all,
I need your-all's assistance in trying to find a place - - probably a church or comm. organization - - that would be; (a.) serving a (free) hot Christmas meal on Christmas day and (b.) would be accepting (substantial) food donations, late in the afternoon on Christmas Eve! whew...!

The thing is, my wife and I have a tradition of doing a major shop (35+ bags of groceries, hams, turkeys, etc.) on Christmas Eve afternoon, then dropping the whole thing off at a needy place, then heading for the Pub!

For a couple of reasons that I won't go in to here, Wayside Mission & Salvation Army are
"no-go" for us.

I'm thinking that there *must* be churches or comm. organizations that could/would use the donation but, for the life of me, I haven't got a clue where to start asking? Seems like there ought to be some kind of central info point - maybe with the City govt. - or somewhere that would have this info.

So if any of you know of such an info point that I can connect to, please pass it along?
Many thanks and Happy Holidays!

Willie,

What a great tradition!

Are you willing to shop from a list? St. Vincent de Paul is looking for donations for their food baskets: http://www.svdplou.org/index.php?option ... ing-events . If you call them, I'm sure they love to work something out with you.

:D

For others in similar situations, it might be worth calling the Dare To Care Food Bank for references to places that can use this kind of donation; or one of the many regional Community Ministries like St. Matthews Area Ministries (St. MAM's) or Crescent Hill United Area Ministries.
