New restaurant east of Summit

by Ellen P » Tue Dec 04, 2012 8:43 pm

Don't know anything about it. Noticed the name change. Was a Beef O Brady; then Rumballs; now Cafe Fiesta (or vice versa). With all the pending signs out here, we will probably see more restaurants. Hopefully it won't be as bad as Westport Road, or worse, Middletown.

Thanks Ellen!
I'd love to hear that this place is great, as it's very close by. But we avoid traveling that section of 22 as traffic / congestion returning is horrible....

Beef O' Brady's was our go-to place for wings. We were really sorry to see them go. I'm sure the construction and traffic were pretty bad for business. Was hoping for something more imaginative, however.

Pedant alert! The Garcias, and the other folks who run those local chains, aren't from Texas, and don't really do Tex-Mex. "Tex-Mex" is really something more specific that we don't have in Louisville, although the original Tumbleweed was sort of a move in its general direction.

I just call it "Mexican made friendly for Anglos."

(There was a short-lived place in New Albany that had the same basic menu of the genre, and their slogan, emblazoned on the menu and on servers' T-shirts, was, "Why have Tex-Mex when you can have Mex-Mex?"

Robin,

I stand/ sit corrected.
However, the typical food in Los Aztecas, El Nopal is not something I've ever experienced in any authentic restaurant / street cart in any area of Mexico. If it's not Texas- then where does the infusion of heavy cheeses, over frying and relatively spice-less " Mexican" come from?

Good question. I think it might be Mexican entrepreneurs trying to please gringo palates?

As a possible data point, "Mexican" was one of the most popular ethnic genres in the Southeastern US for a generation before the Latino diaspora brought authentic stuff northward. I seriously do expect that it was "dumbed down" Mexican forNorteamericano tastes.

I'm trying to think about the differences ... I've eaten Tex-Mex at "nice" and nasty eateries in Austin and San Antonio and in the Rio valley, and it's ... different ... but I'm having a hard time saying just how. Lots of use of chiles, for one thing, and cheese but maybe not the heavy blanket. Might have to do some research here, but like Gore's VP guy told Ross Perot, "I know Tex-Mex, and that's not Tex-Mex."

No, I haven't been there - I was just making a general comment - I meant that I was hoping for something more imaginative than the typical pseudo-ethnic type of restaurant. I value Louisville's mix of locally owned unique restaurants. But, I do admit to being an El Nopal addict!

I wasn't making a negative judgement on Los Aztecas or El Nopal- we really like the El Nopal off Goose Creek when the mood for that kind of "Mexican" hits us. My comment on "standard fare" was because many of those places- whether here or PA or Illinois- have almost identical menus. It's definitely not a local adaption.

FYI - the construction is wrapped up and traffic isn't really a problem on 22 from the snyder out into oldham county. I live out there and drive that stretch during rush hour every day. I don't think this new restaurant is open yet, but every time I drive by and see "Casa Fiesta," which would translate I believe to House Party, I imagine Kid N Play eating tacos.
