Italian-Southern fusion in Memphis

A pal in Memphis just told me about Hog & Hominy. Sounds a little like Blind Pig with an Italian accent.

Should we put this concept on the "What Louisville Needs" list?

Reading the menu I would have a hard time classifying it. The menu is small but certainly covers a lot of territory. Considering they have Poutine which certainly doesn't fit anywhere near Italian or Southern their menus seems a little confused to say the least. Has your friend ever been there?

Nah, she just heard of it. I guess it's new. They also have a deal where you come in for a full dinner, but you don't get to see the menu until the end, so you don't know what you're eating and can't judge. It's all made with "challenging" ingredients that you probably wouldn't want to eat if you knew what they were.

I am a Louisvilian who recently relocated to Memphis. I ate at Hog and Hominy a few weeks ago and wasn't disappointed. I felt the menu had more southern influences than Italian. The mortadella corn dog is the best piece of breaded meat that has ever crossed my lips. The homemade relish and mustard that accompany it, almost steal the show, but ultimately, it is a fantastic appetizer. The pig tails decorated with fried pig ears was my favorite. So much so, that I was craving it for breakfast the next morning. The red hot pizza we ordered (or flatbread...whatever they call it) was so spicy I almost choked on it. It didnt ruin my meal, though, and they did warn me. They make stiff cocktails here, and they even carve out a little boulder of ice to keep your drink cold and strong. If Louisville tries to reinvent this concept, my only request is that they have more comfortable seating.

Welcome to the forum, Emily!

Disclaimer: I was in Memphis last night with Emily - one of my oldest/nearest/dearest friends. She and her husband are as enthusiastic about food as anyone I know, so when I checked in on LHB last night on our way to dinner, I was like "whaaa? No way! Robin made a post about a Memphis eatery and I'm in Memphis right now with my BFF's (Best Foodie Friends)!", and I had to bring it her attention. I barely mentioned the subject and she immediately called it as Hog and Hominy. She's had an account for awhile, but hadn't posted anything yet. All of my best meals are with her.
