Discussion of Robin Garr's Zoe's Kitchen review

Zoe's Kitchen brings new life to the Vogue Center
Voice-Tribune review by Robin Garr

Sometimes a little knowledge is not so much a dangerous thing as just a boring thing. When I learned that a new restaurant called Zoe's Kitchen had arrived in the reconstructed space that long had held Stan's Fish Sandwich, for instance, my wandering mind immediately wandered down a narrow space that holds my limited knowledge of Biblical Greek.

“Zoë,” I thought. “That’s ζωή, in ancient Greek, meaning ‘life,’ or more specifically spiritual life, as opposed to ‘Bios,’ biological life. What a cool name for a restaurant!”

Then I found out that it's just named after Zoe Cassimus, founder of the 12-state chain based in Birmingham, Ala. They do play the Greek card, though, pointing out in the chain's corporate material that "Zoe means 'life' in Greek. Why not live it to the fullest with tasty food shared among close friends and family?"

Indeed, Zoe's Kitchen adds another culinary choice to a neighborhood that abounds in options including a near over-abundance of pizza, if such a thing as an over-abundance of pizza is possible.

You'll find no Italian "pie" at Zoe's, though, where the bill of fare is described as "Mediterranean-inspired comfort food with dietary concerns in mind."

We eat at the Zoe's in the Summit on occasion and like it. In particular, I find their Family Dinners for four ( for carry out) to be a great, fast dinner option that's tasty and reasonably healthy. The only issue I have with them is that they don't post their calorie info and I find they can be a source of hidden fat/calories. For a company that advertizes themselves as healthy, I wish they'd make this available.

You can get the nutritional info here: http://zoesnutrition.zoeskitchen.com/ (and related info at http://zoeskitchen.com/nutritional-info.aspx).

It's kind of buried in the website, but is available (I eat at the downtown location often).

Thanks, Brad! :D They must have recently added it- I'd asked the Summit owner for it awhile back and he said it was not available at the restaurant or online.

Thanks for letting me know,

Susi and I both ate at Zoe's the other day and found it good for a chain. A little bland, but good none the less. All I know, is if I put an 2 oz of meat on my sandwiches and charged what they do, my customers would revolt. But that said, it is good have a healthy quick alternative to the real thing. Loved the white beans w/rosemary.. the Grueben, not so much. Lots of choices though. They will do well.
