Feast of Seven Fishes????

by Tony G » Sat Nov 17, 2012 10:41 am

Does any place within a 50 mile radius of Louisville do the Feast of Seven Fishes for the holidays? Year after year I say I'm going to find somewhere and go do this. But I never have. It's one of those "things to do in my life" I have yet to do. I wish I had a relative that put this on. I'm sure a family FOSF's would be memorable. I think it's an Italian tradition??? Not sure. I've seen several on The Food Network and I about died it looked so good. Thought I would put it on this board and see if anyone of you knew of one.

It is indeed an Italian / Italian-American Christmas Eve tradition. I have never seen it done in Louisville, where our Italian heritage is small and long assimilated. But I've always thought it could be a popular event if someone went for it. Maybe Steven is on the case!

I took a drive and think that this should be our next event.

The Pop-Art Dinner would hit us at a wierd time- the holidays. I can push that one back- besides, I'll be Skyping on Tuesday to Peru to make BVS's event all that it can be.

Nothing worse than throwing a party nobody shows up to, and that would be a concern for me on that dinner.

People would be in the mood for this kind of event. Christmas Eve is a slower night, traditionally. So, execution wouldn't be a problem, I think. Seafood doesn't need resting- indeed it does better when served a la minute. So we're good there...

I have plenty of time to promote this event, which is good because I'm working up a rollout of the new white wine list and glass list. And the developmental needs of my child and my other child (the restaurant.)

Now, Seven courses can be problematic on the beverage side. I don't wan't anyone to get sloppy or feel like they are being underpoured, so I'll have to think that one over. I'm leaning towards a labor-heavy tasting style that overlaps the culinary courses. My bartenders will hate my guts, but they will get over it.

In my mind, I don't talk too much, on this event- but make myself available to address any questions. Just let the feast happen and let people enjoy each other's company.

Familly-style seating, but individualized plates. Except for the bread. We're not going to cut it- we will do that rustic- you will pull your bread from the loaf (a nice little nod to the old world.)

None of this is hard-set-in-stone, but we do have a winner, I think. Majid is going to love this idea. I'll keep you posted, mate)

Stephen,

I think it would be fabulous!

If I can make a suggestion: I would consider planning it for Sunday the 23rd, not Xmas eve, for the biggest draw. Many people have family obligations on Xmas Eve- hence the quiet night. Plus lots of people have to work at least 1/2 day on Monday..... Just a thought.

This sounds phenomenal! I grew up in a predominantly Italian neighborhood (Howard Beach, NY) and my fondest holiday memories include celebrating Festa dei Sette Pesci at the home of our very Italian friends on Christmas Eve - Scungilli, Calamari, Bacala, Flounder, Scallops, Shrimp, Lobster, Cod cakes :) Every year on Christmas Eve since we moved here, I prepare a scaled down (no pun intended) fish dinner, but not the whole shebang.

Our families are coming here for Christmas and they would most definitely love to attend! If this comes to be, the nine of us are all in!!!!

I got the go-ahead from Majid.

And some inspiration from a truly fantastic meal at Seviche last night.

Deb's right, Sunday would be better. We'll open just for this event.

I'll consult with chef and have something within the next 48 hours.

I'm leaning towards a 'Tour of the Mediteranean' theme. The Spaniards, the French, the Italians, the Persians. Different cultures, using the same ingredients, all coming up with different conclusions.

And it's all beautifull. The underlying premise is the Italian/Persian perspective of rustic, clean flavors.

I'm kind of falling in love with the idea, as you can tell.

8) :D

PS: White Anchovy, Wrapped around Carmelized Carrot, Placed atop a Truffled Crostini, Olive Spuma. Kinda what I'm thining for the first course...

You can get them at Lotsa Pasta.

EDIT: I generally don't want them near me, because I will eat them all- they are my crack, for lack of a better word...
