Country ham

by Charles W. » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:00 pm

I'm trying to eat a lot less beef, less pork, and a lot more fish (cue the vegetarian thread!), but being back in NC last weekend, I've been reminded how much I love country ham (decidedly not low sodium). So, any place that serves country ham biscuits or any form of real country ham?

My wife and I are in Cary NC. They have country ham biscuits on the MsDonalds menu.

Morris Deli on Taylorsville Rd near Bardstown Rd sells Father's hams both whole & then cooked & sliced by the pound. They also sell small buns that make excellent country ham sandwiches. '

There are several places in Bardstown that do a great job, but for this area, I recommend Morris Deli.

Not too far from Louisville http://www.finchvillefarms.com/online.aspx

If you want to make your own, they sell slices for biscuits.

True, but Biscuitville and Bojangles have the better biscuits. Good thing I don't have access to them all the time!

This is as far from fine dining as you can get but when I am really hungry for a country ham biscuit it is no farther away than my local White lightening Gas Station with the 5 Star Deli good little country ham biscuit for about 1.89. :)

I ditto Morris Deli. Their sliced country ham is great on their buns, or pick up some small frozen biscuits to make your own sandwiches. I made a special trip across town just to get their country ham last week- way worth it.

Burger's also makes biscuit sandwiches that are pretty good. Just be sure to get them on Saturday when they are fresh. Otherwise, you are going to need to microwave them.

BTW, I'm not a country ham connoisseur, and I don't know what brand they serve at Burger's, but I brought one into work one day for a pot luck and I had a couple people (who presumably know more about ham than I do) tell me they thought it was the best country ham they had ever had.

If you haven't gone to Burgers yet to try their country ham, you'd better hurry. The C-J just announced today that they are closing in March.

We serve Fathers country ham at Dish that we get from Morris Deli. We soak the ham for two days then cook it in Barq's rootbeer, and it tastes amazing! It appears on our Eggs Benedict, a country ham hash, and combined with an egg and cheddar cheese to top our Barn Trio Burger.

It can also be ordered ala carte, so we'd be happy to put it on a buttermilk biscuit as well.
