Greek style pizza in town?

by Zack Sager » Wed Oct 24, 2012 4:04 pm

Is there any greek style pizza in town? Tried a few searches but couldnt pull anything up.

For those unfamiliar, it's not pizza with greek toppings, but pizza made by Greek owners. Common in new england, but tougher to find here it seems.

Very interesting question, Zack! I'll be surprised if any turns up here, but I'd sure be willing to give one a try. Hey, maybe Alison would try making one at AJ's Gyros, in season ...

(For what it's worth, we lived in a heavily Greek neighborhood in NYC, Astoria, Queens, for four years and ate at Greek tavernas a lot, but the only pizza in the neighborhood was sold by Italian guys.)

I was just talking to Alison today about how we (meaning she) could put together a Greek dinner. I've had very little of that style of cooking and what I've had has all been fantastic. I want to try some other things but when I go to AJ's like today, I can't not get a Gyro! Only five days left in-season!

Greek pizza sounds fabulous!
I'm a bitter drinker....I just prefer it that way

Greek pizza is exactly like any other pizza, or at least all the pizza I had in Crete was. They do all the usual margherita, pepperoni etc.. We did try doing a gyros pita pizza last year, or maybe it was the year before!. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it took too long to prepare because we had to use a combination of the flat top and regular oven, so I 86'd it. I might actually run out of food on Saturday in which case I will not be open on Sunday as it is not supposed to be a very nice day anyway..
Shane, nice to see you as always.

I'm not really sure what makes greek pizza...greek pizza. Coming from new england my favorite pizza places were owned by greek owners. My fiance echos this coming from CT too--apart from the never ending sallys/modern/pepes debate her favorite is a greek owned pizza parlor in West Hartford.

We moved back to CT (Harford/Sprinfield area - Granby) two years ago from Louisville. Here, Greek style pizza probably makes up the majority. It is usually square cut, thicker bready crust with a lot of oil in the crust, sweeter sauce with more oregano, mozz and Cheddar mix for the cheese. I am not a big fan and prefer the thinner, crispier Italian pies.
