Best Indian Take-away

by RonnieD » Thu Oct 11, 2012 9:48 am

Ok, so the baby has arrived and we are house-bound for the reasonable future, but we are also craving Indian food. So where can I go and get really great Indian take-away? I'd love to say "price isn't an issue," but I can't so I will say "Give me what you know and I'll determine where my price break is." But I want the good stuff.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations!

My favorite Indian restaurants in Louisville are, in this order

1) Dak Shin
2) Sitar
3) Kashmir

Thank you Antonia,

I assume they all do take-away?

The real question is where you live . . . while I don't disagree with Antonia's choices, to make sure dishes arrive still hot and in good shape you need a place nearby. We are closer to Shalimar and Taj Palace, and while they may not be quite as good as Dak Shin they are also around 15 minutes++ closer!

You have a good point, Andrew. I've found Indian food stays nice and warm longer than some other types, though.

Yes, all of those places will do take-away. And, even better, they're all open 7 days a week.

We are in Crescent Hill, but I am happy to make a drive for great food.

Thanks again to all

I live a 1/2 mile from Taj Palace, but I routinely drive the extra 10 minutes to Bombay Grill in the Forum Center at Hurstbourne and Shelbyville Rd. - so good. But if I lived in Crescent Hill, I would go to Kashmir, consistently very good over the years.

I'm with Antonia on DakShin, but not a real fan of Kashmir or Shalimar. I'd rank Bombay Grill very close to DakShin, but both those options are suburban. I'd probably go with Sitar for proximity, although if you're heading home from the burbs and Bombay Grill or DakShin is in the general area, a side trip wouldn't be a bad thing at all. (Agreed on Indian food's portability and numminess at room temperature.)

I haven't been to Sitar since the dosa menu days and to me, it was mediocre at best. Has there been an improvement? If so, I'll trust you and try again. If you say not much change, I'll just call it a difference of opinion. 8)

No! Don't trust me! I threw it in because I went in the dosa menu days and liked it a lot better than Kashmir at that point. Now that you mention it, my experience is not recent. Frankly, I generally go to the 'burbs now for Indian, specifically Dakshin or Bombay, then Taj India, ahead of the rest of the pack. Oh, and the little Indian place in the Hikes Point Plaza was super, but again, I haven't been back there for quite a while.

We had take-away last night from Bombay Grill and now understand what we have been missing. Wow.

We got the Lamb Biryani, Saag Chicken, Channa Masala, Mysore Masala Dosai, and loved every single bit of every single thing. Wow. Again.

Aimee's favorite was the Saag Chicken and I simply could not get enough of the Biryani. We are instantly devoted and loyal Bombay Grill followers. I think it might become a weekly tradition.

Next we are probably going to try DakShin, if I can find my way out to Buechel...

Thank you all for the recommendations!
