Last minute Austrian wine tasting!

by Ken B » Wed Oct 10, 2012 9:17 pm

We will be featuring the wines of Zantho in Austria at a tasting tomorrow, Thursday October 11 from 4:30-6:30pm at the WIne Market, 1200 Bardstown Rd. There will be three reds and two whites featured...the reds are Blaufrankisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt. While these grapes may seem unfamiliar to you, they will appeal to lovers of Pinot Noir with Old World leanings: acidity over fruit, spiciness in the background, and some minerality as well. St Laurent is a relative of Pinot Noir, and Zweigelt is a cross between St Laurent and Blaufrankisch, so the similarity is not coincidental, especially since all the grapes we're talking about favor cooler conditions, like those in the Andau region of Burgenland, where these wines are produced. The whites are Muskat Ottonel and Gruner Vetliner. We're very excited to bring in the Muskat, as it presents with the aromatics you'd expect, but is clean, minerally and dry on the palate - very refreshing - a wine that should appeal to lovers of similar grapes like Torrontes or Albarino. The Gruner is a step up for the simple thirst-quenching style you often come across in 1L bottles, but leaner and more accessible than some of the rich Smaragd designated Gruners that command higher prices.

Vineyard and Winery representative Thomas Gratzer will be on hand, all the way from Austria to present the wines!

Waaahhh! I would love to taste those wines! Mary and I just drained a Huber Zweigelt the other night, and it's definitely a Euro-style we love - reminded us a lot of a Loire Pinot, lean and tart and transparent, with rainwater-over-rocks minerality. But I've got a workshop that exactly matches those hours. <sob>

That Huber Zweigelt is great! (though I hate to admit, we have dropped it from the shelves at TWM...will have to bring it back before too long). The Blaufrankisch is the only red we brought in in quantity though, if my memory serves correctly, it showed a touch rounder when we tasted the wines some weeks back. We may have tasting bottles open later in the month, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the heads-up, Ken. We went and I'm sorry we missed you.

As a bonus, I got to add two grapes to my quest for induction into the Wine Century Club (http://www.winecentury.com): St. Laurent and Muskat Ottonel, so that was a treat. We bought some bottles, too.

Glad there are some wine geeks around here.
