We will be featuring the wines of Zantho in Austria at a tasting tomorrow, Thursday October 11 from 4:30-6:30pm at the WIne Market, 1200 Bardstown Rd. There will be three reds and two whites featured...the reds are Blaufrankisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt. While these grapes may seem unfamiliar to you, they will appeal to lovers of Pinot Noir with Old World leanings: acidity over fruit, spiciness in the background, and some minerality as well. St Laurent is a relative of Pinot Noir, and Zweigelt is a cross between St Laurent and Blaufrankisch, so the similarity is not coincidental, especially since all the grapes we're talking about favor cooler conditions, like those in the Andau region of Burgenland, where these wines are produced. The whites are Muskat Ottonel and Gruner Vetliner. We're very excited to bring in the Muskat, as it presents with the aromatics you'd expect, but is clean, minerally and dry on the palate - very refreshing - a wine that should appeal to lovers of similar grapes like Torrontes or Albarino. The Gruner is a step up for the simple thirst-quenching style you often come across in 1L bottles, but leaner and more accessible than some of the rich Smaragd designated Gruners that command higher prices.
