Murray's Cheese coming to St Matts, Highlands Krogers

by Robin Garr » Thu Oct 04, 2012 3:04 pm

I'm not familiar with Murray's except through press releases that they've been sending me, but I have to wonder - even after reading the below - if they will really be competitive with the cheese shops at Lotsa Pasta, Whole Foods and Liquor Barn. Anybody familiar with them?

Murray's Cheese Shop Grand Opening at St. Matthew's Kroger

Through an exclusive partnership with Murray’s Cheese, Kroger is preparing to open the first Murray’s Cheese shop in the Louisville area, inside the St. Matthew’s Kroger at 291 N. Hubbards Lane.

A grand opening celebration for the public is Sunday, Oct. 7, from 1-4 p.m. at the Hubbards Lane Kroger, featuring cheese and beer pairings put together by Murray’s experts.

“Louisville is known as a foodie town and we are eager share this unique shopping experience with our customers and educate them on the best cheese for parties, snacking and trays,” said Murray’s Cheese Specialist, Vickie Oliver. “We are excited to offer our customers the chance to try new cheeses they will love and better versions of their favorites.”

There’s a selection of more than 175 cheeses from around the world, plus a wide selection of specialty items including crackers, dried fruit, and an olive and antipasto bar. The staff have recently returned from training at Murray’s in New York City facility. They’ll offer samples and recommendations.

“Murray’s is all about discovering cheese, we want to make cheese approachable to Kroger shoppers,” said Rob Kaufelt, proprietor of Murray’s Cheese and author of the Murray’s Cheese Handbook. “We know the people of Louisville love great food, so we are looking forward to introducing them to some of our favorite cheeses.”

The second Murray’s Cheese shop will open Oct. 21 in the Highlands Kroger, 2440 Bardstown Road.

Robin,
Murray's Cheese in NYC is one of the best cheese shops I've ever been in ( and I've been in alot). Nothing in Louisville compares- down to their own underground cheese caves.

I think however the question is what this in-store location is going to be like- it can't compare to the NY original. It will be interesting to see if it's a significant cheese shop or just taking advantage of the Murray's name.

It amazes me that we lived in NYC as ardent foodies for four years, but never ran across Murray's. We bought a lot of cheese from Dean & DeLuca, though ...

Where is Murray's Head Shed in da city, Deb?

Robin,

The Village on Bleecker is the one I've been to- I believe it's the original and they now have a second. I'd suggest maybe it's new, but they've been around for 70 years.... Maybe they used to be smaller before the cheese renaissance.

Man, I know cheese tastes good, but I also know it isn't particularly healthy. In fact, it is the only food that keeps me from being vegan. I know it isn't good for me, but it is tough to kick the habit. It is like food crack. So darn these Murray's guys......well, the user part of me will be happy at least!

I was a the Westport Kroger a week and a half ago, and they had already been clearing out the old cheese counter. They had a lot of nice cheeses for 1/2 off.

Murray's age a lot of their own cheeses and is probably considered the only place to purchase cheeses from if you are a top restaurant in NYC.

Great little video on them below:

Deb
Which cheese renaissance would that be - the one in the late '70's/ early '80's when the Cheddar Box opened and sold only cheeses LOL ? :D

Has anyone been? I'm interested to hear if it's worth the trip.

I'm out in Prospect now, so if I'm driving that way, I will probably just keep going and go to Lotsa Pasta.

We took a quick look last Sunday while doing our regular weekly shopping. The thing I really liked is that they have baskets around the counter with small chunks of different kinds of cheeses. So you can buy a small piece for $3+ to see if you like something or if you just need a small amount. Works well for our 2 person household.

Are they cutting the cheese to order also, or only selling in plastic? Am I wrong in my expectation that you can ask for a taste of any cheese, like you can at Lotsa, Whole Foods or any good cheese purveyor?

Wound up after watching the debate and couldn't sleep so I went to the Highlands Kroger this morning in the early AM.

They had most of the fresh fruit stands pulled out and the Murray's stand in place and it appeared to be fully stocked. The sign over it was wrapped in paper, but there were several Murray's branded items in the stand. Stand was not staffed, but most of the store is not staffed at that hour either.

If you want a preview, looks like the cheese has landed in the Highlands. Got my wife a wedge of Brie so I'll have to see if it's an improvement over our regular purchase.
