Fresh Cranberry beans?

by Deb Hall » Sat Sep 29, 2012 10:49 pm

I bought some at the Beargrass Market today. Now I'm reading that they freeze beautifully http://blogs.kqed.org/bayareabites/tag/cranberry-beans/, and really kicking myself that I didn't buy more. The season is short, so if I don't get them now I won't have them.

Beargrass is closed for the season and I'm leaving town on Friday. Has anyone seen there elsewhere in town That I can get them mid-week?

Thanks!

Nope. And the two farmers I have gotten them from had bad crops this year.

Shoot! The worst part is the Amish farmer I bought them from wanted to sell me a half-bushel, but I declined because I was worried about using them in time....

I saw some at the downtown New Albany farmers market on Saturday. I'd imagine they'll be back with them, if there are any left, on Wednesday at the market. 4-7pm.

Ha! I didn't really look at this thread at first because I didn't know what cranberry beans were.

So, finally I look, and they are what my folks called shell out beans.

Live and learn. They go good in a pot of greenbeans, BTW.

Memories from childhood. My sister loved them. My mother picked them out of the green beans for her:-) Found them at the 'now closed for the year' St. Matthews market. Called them 'shellies'. They were wonderful with the green beans I bought too. Didn't see them every week, so maybe one of the other markets has them or Root Cellar? Grasshopper have much instore produce?
