ZAGATS At Oxmoor Mall

by RichardM » Tue Sep 25, 2012 3:38 pm

I made a detour by Oxmoor Mall today to go to the Apple Store. I need/want a USB Hub 3.0 (An entirely different story about this which I may write later). While walking to the store I saw a temporary kiosk set up with MacBook Airs (6) and tables with Zagat swag on it. There were 3-4 people in the area as I walked by to Apple. On my way back I stopped and asked what they were doing.

They are inviting people to take a survey of your favorite or least favorite or mediocre restaurants here in the Metro area. There were about 200 listed in alphabetical order and you could just work your way down rating them and leaving comments. I did 22 in about 15 minutes I guess. And got a Zagat t-shirt and a wine bottle opener. While sitting there I saw another survey taker - woman - answer her iPhone. That prompted me to ask if she had Menu and Hours yet.

Of course a brief conversation ensued as I talked about the App and it being developed locally. That woman found it on her iPhone and downloaded it. Two of the workers had iPhones and looked it up in the AppStore and both of them downloaded it. I felt bad. No. That’s not true. I didn’t feel bad at all about using the opportunity to talk to foodies at Zagat’s kiosk about the best food app in the Apple AppStore for Louisville. All you have to do is show them the app for 30 seconds and they want to buy it. One lady didn’t have an iPhone but her husband does and she wrote the name down so he could download this evening for them.

I also talked to the Zagat people and they told me that Zagat is adding Louisville to their list of cities this coming Spring (2013). The survey is to help rate the restaurants. Now we come the real reason for me writing this. PLEASE. Find the time between now and Sunday close of the Mall to go out there and spend 10-30 minutes rating restaurants. The more you rate the more/bigger the swag you get. It is a way for all of us real foodies to influence what Zagat does with our city. In case you don’t know, Zagat was bought by Google last year and they are wanting to expand their cities and users. If you rate 20 restaurants you get the opportunity to get a copy of the Louisville Directory when it come out FREE by telling them your Google+ account or registering for one.

Nice. What were their different levels of swag, if you remember?

Welp. I did 22 'reviews' and got a t-shirt and a wine bottle opener. And I get a FREE - as in college beer - Louisville Edition of the Zagat Guide when it comes out by giving them my Google+ ID.

My guess is they will probably be doing the same with hotels<?> Other things in their guides <?>

Well, thanks, Richard. I went to Oxmoor today and did 60 reviews. The little prizes were a nice touch, but I really did it because I wanted to put my 2 cents' worth in. I went through the alphabetical list and did as many as I could before my eyes crossed themselves permanently. Having referenced Zagat's extensively during time spent in NYC and London, I know the cute, pithy little comments they use. Now the fun will be seeing if anything I wrote makes it into the guide.

Oh, the swag. They gave me all the stuff they had since I did so many, so that was pretty funny. I ended up with a shirt, a wine key, a water bottle, and the 2012 Zagat's NYC guide. And a free copy of the Louisville guide when it comes out.

Now you can do it online - and still get swag.

Is it the same survey as what you do at Oxmoor ? I asked Dana but she wasn't familiar with what they are doing at the mall.

I can't say for certain, Deb, but it appears to be very similar to what Richard described at the mall, with similar swag.

I just looked at it - yes, it's the exact same survey.

Doesn't really matter to me, but to those it does: there is a diiference in "swag". I reviewed over 70 places ( scary that I've been to that many  ); many with comments. I got the guide.
