Interesting but I wonder if it's truly comparing apples to oranges? The average beer in Germany for example is of much higher quality than the average beer here! Does the average cost per liter, or quart, or whatever is much different from country to country.

I've been to Prague 5 times in recent years. Excellent, fresh beer and very cheap, even by Czech standards. Highest per capita beer consumption in the world and it is quite obvious interacting in social and professional circles--almost everyone drinks beer there (women included) and at almost anytime of day.

I highly recommend Prague, if not for the beer, just for the architecture and experience. One of my favorite cities in the world. The old town is the most beautiful part - basically city center. Almost all of the buildings have sculptures carved into the walls, so as you walk along you're being looked down upon by hundreds of stone eyes. Across the river is the castle up on a hill. If you've read Kafka, that is where he grew up and inspired many of his stories.

If you do go, at least one morning you need to wake up super early (sunrise) and get over there before the tourists flock. The streets are simply amazing when there are only a couple people on them. Thousands of tourists kind of spoil the beauty.

Also, get a weekly tram pass, the trams go everywhere, and run almost constantly. I can't imagine getting around town any other way. Almost nobody has cars.

And yes, getting back on topic, there are some breweries in town! I was lucky enough to meet up with some locals last time I was there, so sort of got an insiders tour of everything..fun fun fun....

In the UK, the good beer is generally much cheaper than the adjunct lagers.

In fact, its generally cheaper than craft here, from what I remember, but the cheap stuff here is expensive there. And popular somehow.

I remember beer prices in Germany as being less than the article suggested, and a smaller percentage of income than in the US. Then again, I have no idea how much PBR, etc sells for in the US. :P

I'll be in Germany is two weeks - I'll have to do some more research.

I am officially jealous Deb! I wonder if there's a government grant for that kind of research?

Yes, Mark! I should have convinced the organizers of my International conference (held only once every two years) that they should move the date up to accommodate my drinking activities.

Actually, thinking about it, I'm guessing they planned it specifically after October Fest- that way they could enjoy THEIR October Fest without having to worry about those pesky conference organization details...

Actually the international corporation I used to work for was quite good at scheduling events like you're going to to coincide with major festivals. Things such as Carnival in Brazil, Oktoberfest, the Derby, etc. were quite often one major meetings were scheduled! I think it gave the people traveling an extra incentive to attend! The only disadvantage was in many cases reservations had to be made very early.

I suppose it all depends on what the meaning of beer is.

Just doing the rough math. A decent pilsner brand like Bitburger is c.a. €13.80 for 20x half liters which works to roughly $14.35 for 24x 12oz beers. Not sure what a case of Bud goes for.... not that I'd ever compare Bud to Bitburger.

A lot of common folk in Germany drink really cheap and really sh***y beer from discounter groceries. That stuff probably works to around $8.00 per 24 can case. I think Belgium's the best bargain. Going to the Ardennes this weekend and I usually load up the entire trunk for maybe €130.

Yeah. I'm just glad you're not the one in charge of that.
