Soup

by Gary Z » Tue Sep 04, 2012 3:03 pm

I had some teeth pulled this weekend. This led me to Kroger for soup. A million choices and I could only find a couple I liked. So I started wondering where I could go for decent soup. I'm not talking about some generic tomato or French onion. I'm talking about soup so good it makes the restaurant a destination if for that alone.

Any ideas?

Gary,

If you like a little spicy, the Pozole at Guacamole is great! Also the Tom Yum at Simply Thai, but it's mostly broth so not very filling.

The Cafe's, tomato dill soup is one of the few soups I will go to restaurant specifically for and order as a meal. It is amazing.

The mushroon fume at Equus/Jack's is filling and delicious. Of course I am biased.

Joe Davola's has great soups - cauliflower cheese being of of my favorites there.

The mushroom fumé at Equus is legendary.

Tom + Chee's got some yummy offerings.

Last but certainly not least, Caffe Classico has consistently great soups - never even had anything mediocre there. They change their soups constantly and I always have to get at least a cup of one of them when I go in.

In general, Thai and Vietnamese soups are bold flavored main-course treats. And I concur in the Cafe's soup excellence.

In any case, I hope you heal fast!

You're right... I've got brothy soups coming out the wazoo. I was looking for something more filling. Cream based, bisque-like. That general area.

I love the Tom Khaa soup from Simply Thai with either chicken or tofu. I would have to say my favorite would be Lilly's for soups though. They always have very well made soups that seem to have some thought put into them - doesn't ever come off as a way to use up scraps even if that is what they are doing as most restaurants do.
Shameless Plug Time- I do have to admit that even while I grow tired of eating it, I think our tomato soup with puff pastry has always been fantastic here at Napa River Grill. It is vegetarian (althought not vegan), and they make it daily from scratch in the morning.

I actually live across the street from Napa. I stopped in Sat. for exactly that. It's good but I can't do tomato every day.

There are two soups that immediately come to mind for me. The shrimp bisque at Uptown Cafe is probably my favorite soup in town. One time when Nancy and I were sitting at the bar to eat, I ordered it to start my meal....and then ordered it again as my entree. I don't know that I've ever done that before, but for my redneck palate, it's pretty amazing. (plus you get their amazing bread). A recent find of mine, and I apologize for taking so long, is the bean soup at Check's cafe...terrific!
On a side note, I have to also agree with Ned. The tomato soup in the puff pastry is pretty incredible at Napa River. It has been awhile, but I distinctly remember really enjoying it and need to get back soon to have it.

I used to love the chili from Check's but haven't been back in years. I have a friend who just moved across the street from there so will have to go back and give them a try.

I agree with you Gary, tomato soup is hard to eat over and over again, and thusly I do not eat ours very often any more. I will try to remember to drop you a line on here when we have soup specials that I think you may enjoy. I have been lobbying for them to make my favorite lately - Blue Crab and Goat Cheese Soup - it is possibly the richest soup I have ever tasted, but also one of the best. Maybe they will make some for the colder months.

I had some amazing Green Pea soup at 610 a few months ago, but I don't think you can just drop in and order some soup.

I remember enjoying the bisque choices at Lou Lou. The Roasted Yellow Pepper something or another comes to mind.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
