Highlands

by Alison Hanover » Tue Aug 28, 2012 3:53 pm

I have a friend here from England and it was suggested that I take her to the Highlands to walk around and browse. I have never been myself, how do I get there from Georgetown and any particular recommendations for lunch?

Directions to Louisville/Bardstown Road area
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Take I-64 E across the river.
Get off at Grinstead Drive (Exit #8)
Turn right onto Grinstead Drive
You'll go straight through a couple of stop lights.
About 1/2 mile from where you got off the exit ramp onto Grinstead Dr., the road will fork/split (you'll notice a golf course on your left).
You could really go either way at the fork and the road would intersect with Bardstown Road.
However, I would suggest that you turn left at the split.
Follow the road until you hit a four way stop sign.
Go straight through the stop sign. This is Cherokee Parkway.
Stay on this road for a couple of blocks & you'll see a large statue of a man on a horse (it's a round about)
Go around the horseman, but continue heading in the same direction for another block.
You will intersect with Bardstown Road. The shop "Clay & Cotton" will be on the corner on your left.

.............At this point, you'll need to decide what you want to do. There are shops & restaurants in either direction.

What kind of food do you want for lunch? Price? Atmosphere? There's a lot to choose from.

Walk Bardstown Road, any point from Baxter to the Douglass Loop (you'll know you're there when you see the Twig and Leaf, Heine Bros., Graeter's, etc.) Lots of fun shops and places to stop in for a bev or a snack. Carmichael's bookstore is a gem, and Discoveries is a really neat shop for jewelry and accessories and whatnot.

The Cherokee Triangle neighborhood is beautiful to walk through (said the lifelong resident of the neighborhood.) See neighborhood's boundaries here: http://cherokeetriangle.org/

Lunch: on a weekday, Jack Fry's is a great option for lunch. Lilly's is also great, and they also have a Saturday lunch. The Bristol is a solid Louisville institution. Holy Grale is a great place for a beer and creative food - but not for lunch, as they open at 4. (All of these places are on Bardstown.)

Enjoy the Highlands!

WOW! Just for Allison and her friend or for everyone who mentions this post?

Don't forget the random pilgrimage to the grave of Colonel Sanders in Cave Hill Cemetery. It's just like visiting Mr Mojo Risin' at Pere Lachaise, except you leave the chicken bones behind.

I found this 8 min. video that features a number of shops along Bardstown Road along with stops at Jack Fry's and Asiatique. I think it gives a pretty good feel for the area although there are lots more shops not mentioned in the piece. Note: Luna Boutique is no longer open.

Allison... Please do not make thevsame mistake i did. While touring your English visitor through the Cherokee Rd area DO NOT point out that "some of these grand homes have been here almost 150 years!" They will snicker.

Too funny, actually we went to French Lick the other day and noted that everyone seems quite proud about how old the original hotels are!! 1850 I believe. I have friends who live in houses 500 years old! The hotels were beautiful though and we had a very nice lunch at West Baden Springs. Going to the HIghlands next Wednesday her last day here.
