Crimes Against Beer

Garrett Oliver (author of the excellent The Brewmaster's Table and editor of the slightly less excellent The Oxford Companion to Beer) names 5 crimes against beer -- 4 in restaurants, and 1 from the media.

Thanks for the link Rob. I often visit the bar before going to my table to see what's on offer. Even places that emphasize beer often do a poor job of training their wait staff about what they offer.

I do that even at places that I know have knowledgeable staff. The first thing I do at Rich O's is check out the board for whats on tap.

Okay, you've piqued my interest -- what, exactly, is wrong with The Oxford Companion to Beer?

Thats a wiki devoted entirely to it. It was an interesting firestorm when it came out.

I love it when you guys point me to new sources for great information about beer! I looked at all those links containing reviews of the OCB and I immediately clicked on one that caught my eye. It may have been the most enjoyable review I've ever read of a book I've never read. It was actually a post from this blogger named Robsterowski. Here is a link to his blog. I went there and found another fascinating post dated 15 June 2012.

It seems to be saying that the current trend of brewing in Germany is headed towards less character commodity type beer due to price wars and the German consumer's desire to purchase their beer cheaply. When DanB posted that he was in Frankfurt "the capital of no good beer" I thought he was joking. Maybe not.

"Who makes the best beer in the world? is the provocative question which begins this report by Peter Ruppert shown on German TV last week. Although his discoveries and conclusions will be unsurprising to knowledgeable observers, I think it’s significant to have the status of German beer put on the agenda in mainstream media."

I was kinda hoping for a concise summary, but thanks for the link, that's a lot of stuff to peruse.

And also thanks for the reminder, I really need to pick up The Brewmaster's Table soon.

It's full of inaccuracies, omissions, and superfluous data. Concise enough for you?

At least that's what Robsterowski says in a very entertaining way here.
