Road food road trip in Southern Indiana!
Voice-Tribune review by Robin Garr

Image

I know this is hard to believe, but a couple of generations back, when our parents and even our grandparents were young, a road trip took some planning. There were no Interstate highways and nothing like McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King. What was a hungry traveler to do in those days of winding two-lane highways and no familiar burger logos glowing in the distance?

As it happens, though it may have taken longer to get to your destination, but our forbears arguably enjoyed a finer, tastier and better quality of road food in those days gone by.

Let's take a road trip to Southern Indiana this week, where it's still possible to get off the Interstates, onto the "blue highways," and within a very short trip from Louisville get a taste of something akin to the goodies that Granddad and Grandmom enjoyed when they fired up the old Rambler and hit the road.

Head west on I-64 from Louisville on the freshly renovated Sherman Minton Bridge. Drive through New Albany, haul the long Floyds Knobs hill, and a couple of exits later hop off at the Georgetown exit, Indiana Hwy. 64. Here you face a delightful decision: Head to the right for a delicious gyros at A.J.'s Gyros? Or hook left under the highway for ice cream delights at Polly's Freeze, celebrating its 60th anniversary in business this year?

I highly recommend doing both. Begin with a Greek repast on the picnic tables in front of A.J.'s little white stand. Then make the short trip to Polly's for a '50s style shake or malt or sundae. There's hardly a better road food road trip in the region on a sunny summer's day.

Road trip! Who's in?

Just stopped on this wonderful fall afternoon at AJ's for a pumpkin shake. If you want one there are only 13 days left before they close for the season. The fall color in the area is the best I've seen in many years. Better hurry!

Robin, (or Allison or anybody else who's sampled AJ's) does the establishment make their own "meat cone", or is it the usual Kronos meat?

For the record, I'm not knocking Kronos gyros. I enjoy them very much, but have been hoping for years to find a place that uses actual cuts of beef and lamb to create their own cone.

I would definitely be willing to make the voyage to Indiana for the real deal, but I can get a perfectly good kronos gyros at Lonnie's less than a mile away.

Also, if not at AJ's, if anyone knows of any other local establishment forming their own cone, I would be much obliged if you put me on.

Anar Food Mart
8730 Westport Road
Louisville, KY 40242

This place is shaving from a cone. I don't know if they are buying it pre-formed or not, but it looked and smelled great. They have no seating, so we didn't eat.

La Rosita, a great taco shop, is just a few doors down.

Thanks, Justin, I will have to check it out. And like I said, worst case scenario, I enjoy Kronos cone gyros anyway. I'm familiar with the place because of its proximity to La Rosita.

And I agree with you on La Rosita. They are my go-to for tacos since the demise of Mi Patria(RIP). El Mariachi does a solid job too, I particularly enjoy their homemade tortillas.

I've had gyro from the Anar Food Mart on Westport Rd. a few times, and they're very good. Freshly sliced, generous portions fresh-off-the-cone meat. And a bonus is while you wait for you gyro you can wander around this small store and pick up some mostly-Persian specialties.

Thanks for the reminder, Steve! I live nearby and drive that route daily to my son's school, but I've never stopped in. I need to go check it out now. :D

Well it isn't quite a gyro, but I'll be willing to let this little gem out of the bag that I've been keeping to myself for months. On the weekend nights here in J-town, there is a taco truck that parks in the Marathon on Taylorsville Rd. right past Six Mile Ln. that serves tacos, tortas and the like with the meat as you described stacked up on a spit and cooked on what looks like a gyro cone broiler. You know it's good when all of the local "Amigos" are there getting stuff. There are a coulple of drawbacks. There is there is a huge language barrier. It helps if you can speak some Spanglish or you will be pointing at stuff to try to order because sometime they don't have a menu board. And the service is dreadfully SLOW. But it's cheap and tasty!

sounds like you found some authentic al pastor. Not exactly what I was looking for, but equally as appealing to me.

Good lookin out, fellow Dan. I'll have to put the taco truck on the list and dust off my high-school level Spanish.
