Those are the kinds of places I look for when I travel. Little hole in the wall ethnic joints run by nice, decent folk. It does seem that even in the larger cities, sometimes they just go away. Tis a sad thing, isn't it? :(
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

For casual pasta, I would recommend Puglia's in Little Italy.
It has been several years since I've been there, but the food and atmosphere(especially the fat lady singing) were wonderful.
It was still in operation as of October when some friends ate there around Columbus Day.
For higher class - il Cortile - makes Vincenzo's look like Genny's Diner.

For hole in the wall ethnic, you can't beat Kebab Cafe over in Astoria Queens.
