Camel Milk

Does anyone know where you'd buy camel milk locally? I'm very intrigued about it as I know that other parents have tried it with their Autistic Children. Couldn't hurt..right?

I can certainly understand the desire to help your child and consider any and all such possibilities, but I would be extremely skeptical of such claims. While it may not hurt, such "cures" may cause people to become sidetracked from actual beneficial therapies. I hope that this link helps: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2012/ ... es-autism/

I understand your concern about new and different therapies that people turn to......I read the article, along with all the comments. And as a fellow mother of a special needs child, Personally, I think that article though probably linked with good intentions comes off strong, insulting, and sarcastic to Megan.

I am pretty sure that is not the type of response she was looking for.

Wow, because the physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavioral therapy we go to every week isn't enough. I don't think I could do anymore traditional therapy. The only other thing we do it Fish oil. I haven't even done the GFCF diet because I thought it would be too hard on my son. It's camels milk. I'm not subjecting my child to anything outlandish.

I also had to edit this to add that I do not believe that camels milk can cure my son. In fact, I'm of the group that believes there isn't a "cure"...it's just part of who my son is. He's a wonderful kid! But if I could help alleviate some of his symptoms..especially the intestinal ones he has..I'd love it!

Nicely answered, Becky. I'm sure Daren, you did not mean harm, but I had the same reaction and I don't have any autistic child.

Megan,
I found this which is not local and likely expensive to ship. http://www.camelmilkassociation.org/Did you try asking the FEAT people or asking at Rainbow Blossom / health foods stores if they know of an option? They tend to be very knowledgeable about sourcing these kinds of unique products.

Thanks Deb! I did not ask FEAT, but I'll check around. Believe it or not, there is a whole field of camels out near Cropper, KY. So how hard to you think it would be to milk a camel? Kidding!

Another one as a real long-shot: I bought camel sausage recently from a butcher in Cincy. They are Kroeger Meats. http://www.findlaymarket.org/merchants/kroeger. I have no idea where they source their Camel from, but if it's local maybe they could refer you to their source to see if they have milk ( or would allow you access to their herd. ).

Meg - I feel like I read that one of the Somali markets here in town sells camel meat, so maybe they'd sell the milk too. Sorry I can't be more specific, but surely there's a list somewhere of our international markets.

I don't know if this one is Somali, but it is halal, and located in a part of town where a lot of Somali and Sudanese families live:

There are also supposed to be Somali markets in the newish International Mall, which is on an old industrial site just west of Old Louisville. I'm ashamed that I haven't checked out this place yet, but I really need to.

International Mall
737 S. 8th St. (south of Broadway)
561-8870

Their Website is gone, which is not reassuring, but it might be worth checking out.
