Gas Station Cookin

by Stephen D » Thu Aug 09, 2012 11:49 am

I think I have tripped across something really cool...

So, I simply stopped into the Marathon Gas Station on Frankfort Ave, right next to Boombozz and across from St Joseph's. Just getting some gas. I get out and see a small smoker out back at work...

My ears perk.

I go inside and 'goodness gracious, you cats aren't joking.'

The selection of items was amazing. All of it blue-collar, lunch food (and scratch made.) I even caught the fella cooking coming out with a new batch of chicken.

Let's just say that the mash potatoes I am eating at this moment- scratch. The chicken gizzards- definitely scratch. Delicious Pulled pork. All on the cheap.

It is what it is- but it is the best convenience store, blue collar food I've ever seen.

PS. The bisquits = not scratch.

Hey don't knock gas station food til you have been out thru the hills of Bullitt county or even on the way to Rough River .You can find some mighty good sandwiches for next to nothing and at breakfast I have seen home fries and real fried pork chops .Not to mention the biscuits and gravy. We are not talking Roller Grill here. :D

My family enjoyed coffee/chai lattes from Sheetz stores as we were on a road trip through Pennsylvania and Maryland.

We also has an excellent meal at a rest stop- the Maryland House on I-95, about 24 miles north of Baltimore at mile marker 81.9. We ate from Phillips Seafood Express, and we shared several types of crab soup, But the winner was Philly-style pretzels stuffed with crab and cream cheese!!!

I love good gas station food. On the corner of Truman and White street in Key West the gas station was some of the best late night food around. Done well it would rule. I always wanted Dongar Quick Market on Lexington and Payne to utilize that steam table. Like really do something awesome. But they don't. Well the breakfast sandwiches are ok. But you could knock out a ton of "meat and threes" there if you wanted to.

Word! I love going in there. For less than ten bucks they would hook you up with awesome meat and three type stuff. Then there is the people watching or watching out for... it is locals only for the most part and at 4 or 5 am it can be awesome drunk fist fights over corndogs hilarity.
