There are some help wanted ads popping up on Craigslist for Food Lion Grocery. Anybody know where they are setting up shop. I dont know much about them.

Gross- they had a special on 20/20 about 15 years ago that went undercover at Food Lion. Apparently there was a lady working there for years who admitted that the marinade for some of their meats had never been changed. They were also accused of changing the dates on the meat that didn't sell in time. As a semi-germaphobe, I have never forgotten this news story. The only ones I have seen in the last few years have been in rural areas.

It's a Belgian-based corporation with maybe 100 US outlets, mostly in the Southeast. I believe there's one around Fort Knox somewhere ... Radcliff, maybe?

Did Belgians buy Food Lion. They were a dominant chain in NC/VA, etc. beginning in the early 70's as a low price grocer. They were originally Food Town, but had to change their name when they moved into a state that already had Food Town. The joke was that they changed it to Lion so they could re-use two letters. They were a pretty big chain at one point--way more than 100 stores. Not sure what's up with them now.

Just looked it up: 1300 stores in 11 states. It was Salisbury, not Kannapolis, NC. And "Lion" was adopted in part as connection to Belgian owner. Ralph Ketner was owner/spokesperson forever.

They were actually caught bleaching meat on video to make the colors look better. That report really hurt them at the time.
