Sweet cider

by Tony D. » Wed Aug 08, 2012 5:26 am

Recently in Canada I had a chance to try a sweet apple cider from Somersby. All of the hard ciders I have found locally have been deemed crisp or dry, but never sweet. The sweet cider was not complicated at all, it tasted very much like a glass of apple juice. Any ideas about something similar available in the area?

The only place I've ever encountered such a thing is in England where for a very short time in the fall they have something in the pubs called scrumpy or scrumpy jack. It is fermented cider but there is a lot of sugar left in somehow. I suspect the expert beer makers could say how it's done.

I was recently at Hubers and they didn't even have a hard cider. Maybe in a few months. Thomas Family Winery in Madison also advertise Gails Hard Cider which is described as dry. My favorite cider is Strong Bow in the tall cans. Cheers!

Ahh scrumpy cider brings back memories of my misspent youth!! Woodpeckers cider is usually the first alcoholic drink a kid has in the UK, or should I say the first time they get drunk!! Shane I don't recall it only being made in the Fall though. In Gloucestershire where I grew up it was available year round. Strong Bow is another well known brand you're right.

Hey Alison! Me beer dad used to say, "Oooh its rough stuff and strong it is! You must be careful Shane." I only had it a couple of times as the pubs in the midlands where I misspent my late twenties only had it on in the fall and then only for a few weeks. I had three pints one night in a couple of hours. It was sweet and tasted like apples and ambrosia. I stood up to go and the room started spinning. That's not right I thought. I had to put my hand on Roy's shoulder because I couldn't walk a straight line to the tiny pub's door. Very embarrassing as I was a seasoned drinker by this time.

Woodpecker or Stong Bow were nearly always on offer where I drank but not scrumpy. I am trying to work a stop at AJ's into my schedule for this week. Hope to see you soon. Cheers Alison!

Woodchuck Amber is super sweet and tastes just like apple juice to me.

There are a few nice examples of sweet ciders in the area. The Keg Liquors in Clarksville or New Albany are good places to look for the following:

Crispin Honey Crisp
Henney's Sweet Cider
Ross on Wye Rum Barrel (very mellow on the rum flavor)
Weston's Old Rosie Scrumpy

Weston's Old Rosie Scrumpy Shawn? Sounds interesting, I'll have to check into that.

Also of note, the links below announce details of the New Albany Indiefest to be held on Saturday September 22nd from 2 - 10 in the 400 block of Bank St opposite the BSB. The brewery line-up is exciting. I've drank from all listed except Cutters Brewing in Bloomington and I look forward to trying them out. Best of all it's full pours.

Thomas Family Winery is bringing cider and Starlight Distribution will have some imported ciders as well. Looks like I will need a designated driver. Hope to see some of you there. Cheers!
