a little shoutout to two originals

by JeffD » Sun Aug 05, 2012 8:21 am

Wife and I were in a quandry on what to do for supper last night. We finally decided to pay a vist to The Come Back In on Swan Street. Its been a little too long since we have been but I can tell you it won't be long before we head back! They already had a full house at 5:30 but they had just cleared a booth so we were able to be seated right away. We weren't sure how things might go since Mark and Gina sold the operation maybe close to a year ago. Let me report that things haven't dropped a bit and go a step further to say that I think things are even better. We started with the caponata with pita wedge app. then we split a fresh crisp house salad and both had our own "pasta free bakes". These are kinda like they sound - the ingredients you would generally find in a pasta. She had the, meatballs, mozzarella, peppers, mushrooms etc. but without the pasta. These were very hearty and tasty. Mine was built around 8 oz of grilled pork loin cut into hearty chunks with lots of fontina cheese, artichoke hearts, mushroomes and a little proscuitto for good measure. I washed my meal down with a glass of Valpolicella and she with an individual bottle of San Pelligrino served in a glass with a slice of lime. Excellent meal - good service on a busy early Saturday - and all under $50 before tip. - Why did we wait so long to get back?

Still being relatively early on a Saturday night we decided to hang out around town and take a small stroll. It wasn't too hot last night so it lent to a nice leisurely evening. Later we decided to finish off with something sweet so we ambled on over to lower Frankfort Ave to Sweet Surrender. This is another jewel in Louisville's dining scene. We've been numerous times since they've moved back to the area and under new ownership. this plasce is always fantastic!. Having had such a hearty meal a couple of hours earlier, we decided to share desert along with a couple cups of coffee. As their display case, to which I refer to as The Carosel of Dreams slowly twirled around, I could have imagined tasting all the goods, but we finally decided on the White Russian Cake. Chocolate cake made with Kahlua and vodka, just like the drink, and finished with a light white frosting, this cake was beautiful and delicious and was a great ending to two wonderful dining experices from two re-established Louisville Originals.
