Am I being too picky?

by Alexis Rich » Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:11 pm

So, we went out for dinner last night and dropped some cash. $200 with booze and tip which is a big-time splurge for us. We enjoyed it but when you're spending money like that, you want it to be REALLY good and tend to be a bit more critical.

I ordered an oyster appetizer (in a month with no "R" in it, I know) and they were served on the halfshell with a bunch of stuff on top like spinach, bacon and sauce. Well, whoever was shucking the oysters didn't loosen it by running the knife under the little muscle on the bottom shell. Consequently, I had to do it with this ridiculous little fork this making a huge mess and spilling all the yummy oyster liquid everywhere. Big picture? This is a total first world problem and I should shut up and eat my $13 oysters. This wasn't a very yummy dish (globs of spinach were everywhere and even for oysters they were super salty) to begin with and having to wrestle the little guys made it worse.

Question - Am I being too picky? When I eat oysters raw on the halfshell they're separated so they can slide right out. My husband said I should have mentioned it to our waiter but I can't imagine he would go back and tell the chef what's up. Thoughts? Opinions?

I've had Oysters Rockefeller like that in some places and with the meat loosened in others so I think either is acceptable. Normally the spinach is a fairly large portion on top of the meat covering the entire area of the shell so that appears normal.

By the way, the old saying of only eat Oysters in months with a "R" is becoming less and less relevant because of commercial farming and air shipping of them.
