Findlay Market recommendations?

by Deb Hall » Wed Jul 25, 2012 3:41 pm

Robin,
This place has both ingredients and food to buy so I thought it most appropriate here. Please move if you like it better somewhere else. :D

All-

I've lived in Louisville for 13+ years and had never heard of this historic Market in Cincy until several weeks ago. Lots of chatting about Jungle Jim's and Trader Joes- but never this place. We are going on a Cincy weekend trip soon, and plan to visit the Findlay on Saturday morning. I've been told the housemade sausages from Kroegers are great and that Silverglades has the best cheese selection in Cincy. Anybody have any other suggestions? Is there much is the way of prepared foods and if so- where should we eat?

Thanks!
Deb

Preaching to the choir, since you raised the question here, Deb: The walls between the forum sections are permeable. Think of it as carrying your plate from the dinner table into the family room so you can watch the game while you nosh. In other words, your reasoning is sound. No problem!

I'd bet you've been to the website, but if not, here you go.

http://www.findlaymarket.org/

I thought the market was great, almost on par with the West Side Market in Cleveland, but a tad pricey. I saw a few flowers/plants that were $30 that are $20 at Paul's and we were shocked at the price of a few macaroons and lemon bar when we handed the bill. The place is mostly a very large combination of Paul's/Kingsley's with some restaurants scattered about. There were also a few homeless/transient types wondering around, but none gave us problems.

We ate at Pho Lang Thang and thought it was great.

This place is in same OTR neighborhood and we wanted to try it, but couldn't get in.

Thanks, Justin! Great suggestions.

So I'm truly puzzled as to why I've never heard anything on here about this market before. From the descriptions I've heard ( and their merchant listing) , it sounds like a great foodie destination and it's only 1- 1 1/2 hours away. I'm not expecting the Ferry Market in San Fran, but it sounds like a great way to spend 1/2 day in Cincy. We plan to bring a large cooler to store our spoils... :D

Other suggestions?

Stop in at the Colonel De Herbs and Spice Market. The owner, De Stewart, is a Louisville native. We went to Morehead Univ. together many years ago.

Thanks for the Vietnamese recommendation, Justin! Long wait, but we shopped until our table was available ( They'll call you). The food was excellent and well-priced; they also allow you to drink BYOB wine from the Wine Market with no corkage.

Findlay Market is definitely worth the trip! I picked up some great cheeses I haven't found here at Silverglades - Taleggio, some very good Manchego, Beecher cheddar ( I forgot to ask about Burrata- damn it). Also some very good Serrano- better than I've found in town. Lots of butchers- many appear to be standard stuff and may even be mass -buying, but several are 4/5th generation. Kroeger Meats has 30 flavors of sausage ( rotating), the two we tried thus far were very good grilled - great flavor and very juicy. Large range of flavors, including specialty ( We also bought Camel  - haven't tried it yet). Pricing was very good 2- about $4-5 for two very large-brat sized links. We'll go back just for them.

Ohio City ( Fresh) Pasta has excellent pasta and interesting flavors - we used to carry it at our store and were thrilled to find it there. All their ravioli and pastas flavors are fresh, except their gnocchi ( frozen) which is one of my all-time favorite foods. We're trying their Spicy Lime Cilantro with some Shrimp and Asian vegetables later this week.

Blue Oven Bakery has excellent artisan breads- but they sellout early. Be there by 10:00-10:30 to get some. We were there late so only could buy some fresh english muffins- excellent!

Here's a map: http://www.findlaymarket.org/directions/marketmap.pdf

Large local Farmers Market is also on the grounds in-season- prices looked similar to here. They are open Sundays too. We will be back several times a year. :D

Findlay a super place as well as a wonderful experience....They love "first timers" especially from Louisville. Call Rebecca Heine.

She is the Manager of the Market and an interesting guide(1 - 513 744 8002; rheine@findlaymarket.org ). Just tell her what you want to do and she ll do the rest !!.. It s all good , but take time to visit Court Street and Avrils One of the best Butcher Shops in the USA .

Both places are Civil War Vintage.
