Southern IN Choices

by Bonnie E. » Mon Jul 23, 2012 9:27 am

Does anyone know if The Windsor is still open? There website is "under construction".

I am looking for somewhere to take a friend's Mom to celebrate her 79th birthday. She enjoys fairly basic stuff, upscale or casual is fine. Years ago, Pat's Steakhouse was her choice for celebrations but we were hoping to offer her somewhere different. I thought Southern IN would be nice but any suggestions in Louisville would be welcomed as well.

Thanks for your help.

Isn't the Windsor now Habana Blues, or I am not remembering right?

Your memory is correct. Habana Blue has been open about two years

While I'm not quite your mother's age, I'm almost there. My son and daughter-in-law took me out for my birthday dinner last week. They did, to me, the obvious and simple, they asked me where I'd like to go. I much prefer that approach. Try it; you'll like it!

They might enjoy Louis le Francais on Market Street in New Albany. Country French, pretty setting and very friendly people.

Or Come Back Inn, family-style Italian-American in Jeff?

Too bad I can't say friendly describes my recent experiences at the Come Back Inn. I've been recommending this place for ages and I went there for lunch on Saturday when the Pink Baron turned into a red herring.

They were civil strictly speaking and the food was good as always. Their beer as usual was mostly very strong and sweet but they had Arrogant Bastard. Of course it was served with about three drinks missing because of the towering head. The unfriendly part occurred as one of the bar tenders carried on a bitch session in front of me the whole time I was there. Apparently pissed about someone else requesting time off. Then she was pissed about how the bottled beers were stacked under the bar. I had full intentions of ordering another beer when I sat down. Believe me, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I left an excessive tip just so I didn't have to interact with that girl anymore.

I've had lunch at the bar there three times in the last year. They have seemed tolerant at best. Perhaps they would prefer I didn't eat at the bar. I'll do them one better and just not eat there at all. Too bad really, as I think they turn out really good food. Oh well, so do a lot of other places.

In fact, I would recommend the River City Winery in downtown New Albany. I've also eaten there four times in the last year. I have been consistently surprised by how great their food is. I've had a bunch of menu items including their pizza. I ate there Sunday and the food was excellent. Sadly they have no beer (I know they're a winery)! I do recommend the River City Winery.
I'm a bitter drinker....I just prefer it that way

Several recommendations that I can give you:

New Albanian Bank Street Brewhouse, downtown New Albany.... excellent food, more of an upscale menu than you would expect from a brewery. Unique modern interior.

Cast Iron Steakhouse, Jeffersonville. - An extension of Buck's from Louisville, they have fantastic steaks, with a casual, to slightly upscale atmosphere.

Louis La Francoise, downtown New Albany. Very authentic French food, great wine list. Even if you do not know much about French food, the menu is very easy to discern. The quality is top notch, with a fun lively atmosphere, without being extremely loud.

New Albany Exchange (off of Grantline Road in New Albany). Excellent food, neat atmosphere. If you go here, you have to try the pretzel bread with beer cheese.

Habana Blues, downtown New Albany - if she is a bit adventurous, tapas at Habana Blues is a great choice. A huge variety of dishes, with a bright & lively atmosphere.

Hope these help!

Thanks. Cast Iron Steakhouse looks like her kind of place.

And Gayle, of course her daughter asked her where she would enjoy going, but her mom isn't one to be fussed over and always answers "Wherever you girls want".

Thanks for the suggestions.

As long as Louisville is OK, she'd likely love Henry's Place! Food is great, atmosphere wonderful, if you were to be seated in the bar just ask for a table in the main room and they are glad to oblige (not sure why Robin didn't ask when he went), very upscale, yet also quite affordable.

Actually, I didn't go into that in detail in my review, but I did. The host just stared at me. I didn't want to make a scene, so I shrugged and took the table. In fairness, she seemed young and inexperienced, although the place had been open for several weeks by then. And also in fairness, our overall experience there was very good. I concur in your recommendation, although I tried to stick with the OP's request for a Southern Indiana venue.
