To Shout Loud the Banner of a Local Prize.

by Jason B » Fri Jul 13, 2012 8:17 pm

After “lurking” per Deb ;), I felt down about starting with such a critical post re: Le Realis - though I don’t regret it in the slightest. That said, I wanted to give a shout out to a place I’ve loved since 1995. Morris’ Deli (formerly Karem Deeb’s) is a liquor store with a deli counter, half a block from the upper Highlands’ intersection of Bardstown and Taylorsville roads, across Taylorsville from the Appallingbee’s.

When I first moved to Louisville to go to Bellarmine, it was a husband and wife professor pair that took me and was the first good meal I remember having since moving to our Derby city. I’ve frequented ever since - and longed for it in my four years away. The fume of smoke that is the chicken salad. The often (thought not always) pinky, rare roast beef. The salty, rich country ham. These and others provide the protein base for made-to-order sandwiches that avail bread options from standard white to sourdough, and veg options galore, cheese options fantastic, and gorgeous sides like creamy, tarragon laden potato salad, vinegary German-style potato salad, and beer-enriched bbq baked beans. They also have a great chili and a broc chedd soup along with some other nice spoonable options. Couple all that with a mind-numbing drink selection (everything from old school Tab and other colas/drinks in the fridges to whatever you might want from the beer walk-in and/or well-supplied liquor shelves) and you’ve got one great place - to eat (yep they’ve some tables) or to carry-out with some bottles or kegs for a night’s festivities. This place rocks.

Good post, Jason, thanks. It's surprising, given its handy location and quality, how rarely we think about Morris Deli.

I have to chime in here. I have enjoyed the Morris Deli a lot, eat there often. In the trade on the liquor side, Johnny Morris is an upright guy and I respect how he runs his business. BUT as mentioned in the thread below, my one great complaint is the bread on the deli side straight up stinks. Brings down on otherwise very good establishment. And yet, I return there, time and again. Maybe because I can walk from my house. . .

We love Morris's--what a great place! We always get their country hams (and the best country ham salad I've ever, ever had!!!) for Thanksgiving, Christmas and for gifts. It is definitely an unsung gem in Louisville's dining/carry-out places. Thanks for making note of them!

And in respect to Ken B, this is not a place that fresh-baked bread or substitutes from Blue-Dog bakery should loin the offerings. Sometimes decent, simple fair is all that's their. This is what they have. It’s country and it’s true.
