Main Street Monday

by Leah S » Wed Jul 04, 2012 9:25 am

On Monday, July 9, eight food trucks will gather in the 400 block of West Main Street. We'll be right by the entrance to the Belvedere, across the street from Humana Corporate. Trucks expected include:
Holy Mole, Bar.B.Lou, Black Rock Grille, One Hot Tamale, Genius in a Box, Traveling Kitchen, Reds Comfort Foods, Louisville Dessert Truck. A couple of the trucks who regularly participate in Food Truck Tuesday are on vacation next week. If this goes well we'll make it a monthly event.

We'll be on both sides of the street - Because two trucks serve from the left, they will be on the south side of the street; all others serve from the right side and will be on the north side of the street.

If you know people who work in the area, please help us spread the word.

Serving 10:30 - 2:30.

I'm curious, does anybody know why the food trucks aren't allowed on the Belvedere?

It seems like it would be a perfect spot, and is really underused when there isn't some sort of a festival going on.

My recollection, from times past, is that there are weight-loading issues on the Belvedere, which is basically the roof of a multi-level parking garage. But my recollection may be stupid. It has happened before. ;)

Robin's memory is correct. The Belvedere has suffered some damage in past years from overweight and can not support a lot of extra wright in certain sections. If you know where to look, you can see the weak spots. Also that area is managed by the Waterfront Development folks, who generally require a revenue share arrangement, which raises the cost to you. We can do these events cheaper and more efficiently on the street

Whew! Now that I've gotten some sleep. let me say the truck owners were pleased with the turnout and I think we'll do it again. There must be thousands of people in those office towers and we just need a few more to come down to street level.

The only big issue was that the trucks on the north side of the street, couldn't hit the internet for credit cards. Trucks on the south side had no problem. Weird.

Leah,

Great to hear it!

Some constructive suggestions from friends who work downtown: if you want more people to come, it was suggested the trucks need to increase their order taking and procesing speed. Alot of folks who work in those buildings have an hour MAX, and they need 10-20 minutes to get out of the building and to a truck and back. The success of the trucks can cause long lines and delays in getting food out. Unfortunately, when serving this crowd, they aren't willing to wait 10 minutes to place and order, then 15 mins to get food, at each truck. I know people who left last time because of the lines- the perception is that it may take too long. A pre-prepped, fast- foodish model would be ideal. ( Yes, I actually said that  )

Cupcakes of course are ideal! :D :D

^ I agree with this. Some non-salary workers don't even have an hour for lunch, they have 30 minutes.

When I was in the Navy back in the 70's, we used to have a fleet of "Roach Coaches" (similar to the one pictured below) that roamed the various naval facilities in Norfolk and the surrounding area. The food was prepared in a central commissary and the trucks were loaded and dispatched from there. They would show up pier-side for breakfast and return again for lunch. As I recall the food, while not "gourmet", was pretty darn good and the operation was incredibly efficient. These trucks would turn several hundred sandwiches and other food items in the course of a meal with never anything resembling a long wait.

Apparently ask and you shall receive. A acquaintance who works in "corporate" for Subway told me that Louisville is one of several cities where they are working to put multiple trucks on the road. The concept as I understand it is to market a limited menu featuring their "Fresh Fit" sandwiches.

Also, per their Facebook page, The Mellow Mushroom will soon have a truck roaming the streets...at least on a part time special event basis. Here's a picture of their rig...
