Dining out options with a dairy allergy?

by Chris Scott » Tue Jul 03, 2012 2:15 pm

We have a one month old who is breastfeeding, and it appears as though she is having an allergic reaction when my wife eats dairy products. Seeing as we are both big fans of cheese, butter, pizza, etc...we are trying to figure out which local restaurants best cater to a dairy free (and preferably soy free) dining experience.

My first thought was Roots and Zen Garden (or any vegan-friendly restaurant), where it would be very easy to avoid dairy (though soy would be more difficult)...but though I might seek further enlightenment here. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Focusing on restaurants with vegan options would be your best bet. :)

Uncle Maddio's has a vegan dairy-free and soy-free mozzarella called Daiya for their pizzas. Earth Friends Cafe in New Albany also offers Daiya among many other vegan options. Zen Garden is yummy, not sure how well it would go with soy free though.

I do want to add though that unless there is a documented soy allergy or a diagnosed case of a specific type of breast cancer, there really isn't a reason to avoid or fear soy.

We do not use soy in our bakery and many of our items are dairy free. Fell free to stop in anytime for breads, cucpakes, pizza (fridays), and waffles (Saturdays).

Kari,
Not to pick at your post, :D but to clarify for those who don't know:
ER positive breast cancer is one of the most common forms of breast cancer. It feeds on estrogen (hence the E). Women with this cancer are not supposed to eat any significant amount of soy- as it is a risk factor for future cancer.
Unfortunately breast feeding doesn't prevent breast cancer or indicate you don't have it. In my case, I breastfed my son until 10 months and was diagnosed when he was 17 months old. A friend of mine's son was 3 months old when she was diagnosed as Stage 3.

Ladies- get your mammograms. :D
( End rant)

Apologies for the incorrect info...the "soy is evil" movement frustrates me, mostly because it is funded by the dairy lobby.

Kari,
I don't disagree. :D I just know for women in my situation the estrogen in anything is an issue. Personally, I don't freak out about it- I just consume small quantities.

Back to the original post- I believe there was a post about this issue previously- you might want to check the advanced search. I know Chef Dallas at Theatre square Marketplace is fantastic about accommodating dietary restrictions- just call. Also, I'd expect Seviche to have several dairy-free options; Latin American ( and Asian) cuisine don't necessarily use a lot of dairy.

Many of the side dishes at Smoketown USA are vegan. I often forget about this place, but it's always great when we go.

eta: I think Daiya cheese is gross, btw. Give it a go, but I found it to be... oily or something. It just had a weird consistency to me.

Come see me at El Mundo. It's not a problem to skip dairy and get tons of options.
If you look at the website 502elmundo.com you will see that you can get plenty of flavours without cheese or sour cream. Not even an issue! I just had bison skirt steak tacos with no dairy involved...of course a breast feeder may want to skip the cucumber- jalapeño salsa involved!
