Pumpernickel with coffee?

by MarieP » Mon Jul 02, 2012 11:45 am

One of my co-workers is leaving to take a position elsewhere, and we are having a going away party roast- coffee roast that is! Since he loves coffee, we are having that to be the theme of our food. BBQ with a coffee rub, cup'o'joe baked beans, tiramisu, cappuccino cheesecake, homemade coffee ice cream... It was mentioned as an idea that the bread could be pumpernickel, which can be made with coffee. So, I was wondering if you knew of any place in town that has good pumpernickel bread made with coffee? Or, perhaps there is some other type of bread that has coffee in it that would be a dinner type bread? I've never baked a yeast based bread before, so I'd rather not try on my own!

It doesn't have to be pumpernickel, but rye breads tend to be a little more agreeable to the extra acidity coffee will add. I did find something on one of the bread baking forums from someone that used coffee as their liquid when making a sourdough bread and said it had no negative effects. They also recommended adding in a bit of coffee grounds and chocolate chips.

If you don't want to make the dough yourself, you could always grab some frozen dough at Kroger or Whole Foods and add in some coffee grounds.
